Thanks Dig, Australian Army units that do the amphibious landing/assault stuff...because for about five years I thought you guys had marines.

Oz doesn't have specialized amphib assault forces, although the two Commando Regiments (one Active and one Reserve Unit) do train more than others. Pretty much our Infantry are the masters of all. Never had Marines as such except back in colonial times when the British Marines were the police force of the colony.

The 2 new Canberra class Assault ships under construction way see some change in doctrine, once they are made operational.

Schoolies is a week long underage acholic binge fest.
Generally held on the Gold Coast of Queensland.
So once the final exams are done, all the kids head off to the Goldy to break free for a week.
But with the amount of school kids out on the streets and beaches for the week, it also attracts a large amount of people who left school a long time ago who are basically there to casue trouble and prey on the legitimate schoolies.

Its pretty much the Australian version of spring break.
Considering the age of consent is 16, massive orgy. (I was told by an Australian broad)

Vehicle registration varies from state to state, also for the use of the vehicle and the size of the vehicle. There is a discount for paying for 12 months rego as opposed to paying for 6 months.
I have a 4 litre ute, for private use, registration is about $550 a year IIRC.
Insurance varies dramatically on your age, where you live, the age of the youngest driver, the type of vehicle, driving record, accident history, some times on the distance you drive.
For my ute as mentioned above, early 30's, no accidents in the last 5 years, good suburb, no speeding tickets of late it's about $850 a year.

Carlo Copp is a goose.

What sort of Army Officer. A Platoon Commander is on about $60,000 including allowances, a Battalion Commander is on about $130,000 including allowances.

Police again vary, $56 grand for a probie, $65 grand for a Constable, $71 for a Senior Connie, About $80 grand for a Sergeant. Add allowances and shift penalties to that.

A worker, that's a bit broad. I'm working with people on $45+ an hour, doing 84 hour weeks. Other people are in $12 an hour jobs doing less than 20 hours a week.

Yeah - we are the event horizon for a worm hole!

Anywhere in the southern hemisphere will have water spiral clockwise. It's the earth's Coriolis effect.

Technical and Further Education. Kind of equivalent, but it caters for job skills rather than lettered qualifications. I.e if you want to do/complete high school as an adult, or do business admin, computer skills, etc, TAFE is where you could do it.

When I did my apprenticeship as a boilermaker, I did a lot of technical training there, theory f welding, structural engineering, reading schematics, etc.

No guns. Don't need them unless im specifically going after something. We don't tend to have too many crazies away from the cities, unless you are in a known drug production area, then you tend to steer clear.

Years ago there was a place we used to mountain bike. In one area, if you stuck on the trail it was fine, if you left it guys would shoot at you with air rifles. We only found out as the council "work for the dole" guys put a new track in and were getting shot at. Turns out these guys had a large marijuana plantation hidden behind a large rocky outcrop.

Beautiful girls are everywhere in Australia.

There are hot women all over Australia, however the nicest ones (Personality wise) seem to be in Perth. Queensland has a lot of bikini babes, but they're dumb as all ****.

Sydney they are quite pretentious. However, if you're the corporate type its all good.

Last time I was up there a short while ago for work I was in my suit stumbling around the city rather smashed on a wednesday night, and I had a couple of real hotties come up to me and go 'Got a light?".

I said "Yep...".

One girl goes "You're not a banker are you? We've just been talking to some of them and they are soooo boring."

My reply "Nope..."

The girl goes "So what do you do then?"

My reply, without missing a beat "Im a stunt **** for ****."* then took a drag of my smoke.

The chick simply looks me up and down and goes "Nice tie.. what are you up to tonight?". Needless to say, she ended up back in my hotel afterwards.

Down here in Melbourne there are some hotties too, but they seem more into the sporty/tradey/creative types of guys. Adelaide has A LOT of hot women. Everywhere. It must be something in the water. A lot of them have mouths like blokes though, so if you can handle that...

Are the gangsters/thugs/wannabes or whatever the hell else they're called the same in Australia as in the US (e.g compton)?

Most of Australia is "ruled" by Bikey gangs (which are predominately white bogan Australians), except for Melbourne, which is mostly under control of various Italian crime families through local proxies. A good portion of cafes, fruit and vege markets, and the port in Melbourne is basically run by various Italian crime organizations who never bother the public. There is of course the presence of lebanese communities, asian communities, etc, but the Bikey gangs generally have a lock down on most places in Australia except Melbourne.

Generally most of it is low key and doesn't effect the public much. There is inter gang rivalry that goes on from time to time, but they are under HEAVY police surveillance. I remember one of the bikey gangs came down to Melbourne and they had police escort, hundreds of police bikes, cars, and a helicopter.

The Aborigines here generally don't form gangs at all, but usually hang outside the local supermarkets in strategic locations drinking goon and telling you to get out of their country.

Most of the violence here comes from drunken or iced up (crystal meth) fvckwits on the weekends. And there is quite a bit of it. I know especially in Melbourne there is a massive drug community, and all the crime that is associated with it. However both Sydney and Melbourne are actually fairly large cities (approx 5 million and 3.8 million respectively, bigger than most cities in the US) so things could be a lot worse.

Excluding bike gangs, are any of them armed? Would defending yourself from a bunch of thugs result in you getting a cap in your ass like East LA or such?

Not really. You are in a much higher danger of being stabbed or beaten with a baseball bat than shot. Guns are generally reserved for high profile gangland assassinations and are hard to come by in Australia (except for certain low calibre rifles, which you can own via a license). Hand guns and semi autos are banned, but do exist. I could get a handgun tomorrow through some illegal channels, but if I was caught with it, I'd be very fvcked.

I know someone who's relative was rolling over drug dealers a while back. It eventually went wrong, one dealer had a samurai sword and ended up killing his friend, he ended up escaping and put some shots into the guy. The cops got wind of it and all sorts of the equivalent of SWAT came down on this guy real fast. This kind of stuff is rare but does exist.

Recently one of the high profile gangland figures was shot in broad daylight in Melbourne, and a while ago there was a proxy war between the Italian crime families that involved a bit of shooting, but the average guys on the street are mostly armed with knives over guns. Chances are unfortunately you are more likely to be stabbed by some drunken fvckhead than for being on someones 'territory'.

Not usually. Carrying a gun in Australia is a serious no-no and it's not something the average gang dude would be doing. You're more likely to cop a broken bottle, a cricket bat, a knife etc.

Nah, I more meant that apart from a few surges recently due to massive public outcry at the violence in the city, they're virtually unseen. Looking at the TV-show "Border Security" I wonder why the laws in Australia seems so light. For example a Vietnamese women tries to smuggle 1 kg of heroin into Australia and only gets like a couple of years in jail, a Chinese couple try to bring in fruits, seeds and stuff like that without declaring it only gets a warning, an Indonesian fishing vessel is caught on Australian waters wile fishing sharks and has a whole cargo full of shark-fins, the captain gets a month in jail and a few thousands in fine. These kind a puny punishments won´t scare off anyone doing similar crime...

Low gun crime doesn't mean no gun crime. Besides, there are other things that can kill you besides a bullet. Imagine getting called to a break and enter to find the robber wielding duel machettes and off his face on ice, I'd sure as fcuk (and so do my family who happen to be police officers) want something more than an extendable batton that will bend and break the second you smack someone with it.

Why are Austrian women called 'Sheilas' and not Huldas or Helgas?

Thongs are now good to go on the job.

If you like fast paces blockbuster style action books, Mathew Reilly does good books, John Brimingham also does interesting action thriller type books. Tim Winton tells good Australian stories, as does Bryce Courtenay, although his stuff as he gets older does not interest me, but his early books are fantastic, I would have read The Power of One and Tandia a dozen times when I was younger. I like Peter Fitzsimons take on people and our history, although his subject matter is primarily focused on Australians.
