I've hurt my back a couple times lately. Definately lifting improperly, but probably not in the best shape either.
What is the best exercise for strengthening the lower back... or is this a "dont' fool with" area?

Try yoga or pilates. I friend of mine tore a major muscle in her back and had back problems for years. She took up yoga last year and says she feels awesome. Plus, she much more flexible.

DO NOT deadlift. Worst. Exercise. Ever.
Try 'bridging'

Yoga & pilates will definately help your lower back. I tweaked my low back doing cleans awhile back & did yoga stretches as part of my rehab. They helped alot. Concentrating on working your abs and developing core strength will also help prevent further injury. Depending on how crazy you are into fitness check out this site: www.crossfit.com The BEST site for developing athleticism, core strength & endurance.
If you can take it about 600 mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day for about 5 days (taken with meals) will help with inflammation. Good Luck.

Furey's stuff is excellent. Always great to do on TDY if you can't find a gym...Even if you can find a gym body-weight exercises are great.

Try some of these exercises Hotty,

Stretching and strengthening your core body muscles is the way to go. Yoga and pilates wouldn't hurt either.

If you don't have access to one, you can start off by laying on the floor and doing the same motion (looks like fish flopping). But do not 'flop like a fish', do this exercise slowly and maintain control because the back is sensitive to pulls and strains.
If you eventually find access to this machine, you can progress by holding weights to your chest and such. Hope this helps...
Edit: Don't forget to stretch ;)

Dont do any of those exercises.
If you have hurt your back before. Chances are it will happen again. Keep it light. Dont do anything that stresses the area.
try taking up yoga, and do lots of stretching.
Stop doing situps. Instead do crunches.
Take up yoga and stretch until you can feel a "big" difference in that area.
Honestly, the back is a very serious issue when it comes to injuries. If you mess it up you can mess up the rest of your life. Take it easy and gradually you will get back and be able to do building exercises again.

Leave deadlifts for proffessionals.
Its not really an exercise for women.

How bout leaving this to the doc lads? ;)
What exactly have you done to your back?
It would help me to give the best advice if I knew a bit more, such as:
-when did you hurt it?
-does it still hurt now?
-where, exactly, does it hurt?
-have you done anything like this before?
-what have you done about it so far?
Backs are tricky things. I would advise against doing anything too strenuous if it is still painful, it is possible that you could injure your back further if you do.
On the other hand, nothing is the worst thing you could possibly do!
It has been shown in many studies that the old advice of bed rest is in fact very detrimental to back injuries, and actually worsens the prognosis. Often, prolonged rest can turn a back problem into a chronic condition.
The best thing to do is see your doctor if it is really troubling you.
Otherwise, just carry on as you normally would but be carefull about lifting heavy objects or otherwise straining your back (things to watch out for are really forceful coughs, straining to put shoes on and straining on the toilet...possibly the worst thing to do would be to get constipated!)
Take Ibuprofen or similar Non-Steroidal if you need to, but don't attempt any of these exercises until you are free of pain. Normal daily activity shouldwork everything back to where it was, so keep active!
When you do get better, the best exercises are hyperextensions. So just lie on the floor face down and slowly and gently raise your upper body off the floor (with your arms behind your back). You can try the exercise pictured below when you get a bit stronger, but definately don't do that now! (especially not with weight)
If you have any questions, please ask. Hope you get better soon!

Thanks guys. You've given me some ideas and some good links to check out. I'm definately not doing anything that feels too strenuous when I start.
