Near half of Egypt’s women harassed daily: poll

More than half of the men admit to lewd behavior

Most women said they were harassed in the street or on public transport

CAIRO -
Almost half of Egyptian women are ******ly harassed on a daily basis with more than half of Egyptian men admitting lewd behavior, the Egyptian Centre for Women's Rights said on Thursday.

The group polled 2,020 people -- including men and foreign women -- in Cairo, and the center’s director, Nihad Abul Qomsan, said that the figures showed harassment was on the rise.

Of those surveyed, 83 percent of Egyptian women and 98 percent of foreign women said they had been harassed at some point, while 46 percent of Egyptian women and 52 percent of foreign women said they were harassed daily.

Most women said they were harassed in the street or on public transport, with harassment defined as "any unwelcome behavior of a ****** nature which makes women feel uneasy and gives them a feeling of insecurity."

Abul Qomsan said that almost two-thirds of Egyptian men -- 62 percent -- admitted harassing women, including those wearing Islamic headscarves.

"This shows that the belief that harassment is linked to women who wear indecent clothing is false," she said, condemning the fact that in the deeply religious country women often feel responsible despite being victims.

The centre said that last year only 12 percent of women went to the police with a harassment complaint.

In 2006, women's rights activists angrily spoke out against what they called the authorities' acceptance of ****** harassment against women, after a mob of men openly molested women in central Cairo.

The interior ministry said it did not receive any formal complaints and has never admitted any mass harassment occurred despite the incident being widely reported in the press and some bloggers posting footage on the Internet.

What countries do you refer to and what does it have to do with the news anyway ?

I don't want to derail but if it is the same or almost the same in western countries it appears to me as a way of throwing the stone to a particular country when it should be better to clean our countries.
Not so long ago there was this thread about rape in the army : http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?t=135439&highlight=harassment+army
It's 29% women raped so, to plagiate the bible, the first that is clean throw the stone.

Lived there, study that was published at that time said 98% of women at my university had been ******ly harassed.

The reason is simple, society is so ******ly repressed that men have no ****** outlets, i.e. normal relationships. That combined with a culture of machismo leads to rampant ****** harassment.

Egypt is the worst of the ME countries afaik. Quite disgusting for someone who grew up in a society where we try to achieve some sort of equality of the sexes.

I'm not sure you could define the Arab mens' behavior/attitude as machismo;the machismo I've seen in Central and South America is different, well to me it is,different in the way it doesn't appear to be mean spirited or hostile, than what it is in the Middle East

I could be wrong, but that's my perception of the whole thing, another thing is to treat women like crap and not fully appreciating the fact that it's the WOMAN along with the man who carries on the human race, and that man can't do it by himself

Is my estrogen level showing?

I was in Egypt last year visiting friends who got married. My girlfriend was harassed a few times on our two week stay. Mostly by kids.

According to Lonelyplanet, an Egyptian man once told one of their guidebook writers that he and his kind harass western women 'cos 1 in 10 actually do give 'em ***.

Makes up for the 9 that don't, I suppose.

Studies have shown that this ratio is universal no matter where you go. On topic, cultures that don't have laws, customs & beliefs that respect women will obviously have a higher rate of harrassment & rape. Whether this is the case in Egypt is out to the jury. But you would think it would be due to the reasons I stated.

Have any of you experienced Cairo night-life? My idea of nightlife is not no women about after 8pm and shisha shops full of blokes playing dominoes.
As for the lack of bars...

hmmm ,
these kind of woman abuse is every where in the world , wounder what is the statistics in your country ..

For me I feel brave these bad acts in our countries and mention here in the forum , but would you ..

Not long I watch a TV documentary on Russian TV about kidnapping Russian young girls and send them to Israel ( via Jordan , Egypt borders ) , Spain and Germany where to work as prostitute by force under threats with guns or to kill their families in their homeland etc ..

Lets face our facts to make this world much better ..

Tell me about it , I lived in Egypt for long enough to hate this acts of harassments .. maybe its not serious if you mean physical abuse / harassments , but for sure its very offense morally ..

Once my wife complain to me about such harassments i believe I would kill the guy for it if I was present ..

I did not understand your point .. but in general if you want to see the beauty and the good of Cairo that would be only at night .. specially in Ramadan ,, Personally when I'm in Egypt I care not to go out at day time ..

Not sure what you are referring to. There are plenty of clubs where you can get well ****faced and large number of bars and restaurants that all serve alcohol. There are plenty of women and they're pretty hot as well.

I have had no problem going out in Cairo and having a blast, especially considering the cheap beer :]
