Air show to highlight Week of Eagles
Fort Campbell's Week of the Eagles celebration is predicted to be the biggest ever with an aim to showcase the 101st Airborne Division's past, present and future legacy through an array of spectacular shows and events.
While most of the activities are for soldiers and their families, the 10K run, division review and Super Saturday air show are open to the public.
"The air show will be huge," said Command Sgt. Maj. Mark Nielsen, project noncommissioned officer. "We're expecting somewhere between 20,000 to 40,000 people. The whole Week of the Eagles culminates at the air show."
The free show will include a full-scale modern air assault with about 500 soldiers and pyrotechnics, a fair for kids and hundreds of wheel and track vehicles and aircraft on display.
Demonstrations of aircraft from the Vietnam era and Soviet MIG fighters will be in the skies in addition to modern helicopters, airplanes and Air Force jets. The Golden Knights parachute jump team will give a demonstration.
"It's one enormous event that we put out every two years. The soldiers, veterans and communities, to include even Nashville, have really pulled together. This is not just a state event it's a national event," said Nielsen, who has received calls from all over the country from people who want to participate or attend.
Project officer Lt. Col. Randal Campbell said the weeklong event is budgeted for $300,000, with more than two-thirds of that coming from nonmilitary sources.
"We wouldn't be able to have this tremendous event without the (donations)," Campbell said. "The vast majority was donated by corporate sponsors that want to support the military."
