After two bulldozer attacks in three weeks, tensions escalate between Israeli and Arab Jerusalemites. By Stephen Flurry
JERUSALEM—After rushing to the scene of Tuesday’s front loader attack on King David Street, Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski indicated a possible crackdown on Arab construction workers throughout the city. “We should reconsider the employment of these people,” he told a television reporter at the scene of the attack. He praised the diligence and effectiveness of Israel’s security forces, but said construction equipment, if placed in the wrong hands, gives Israel’s enemies a back door through which they can attack Israel’s population centers.

Immediately after Tuesday’s attack, a group of about 50 religious Jews assembled at the crime scene to protest the spread of terrorism, chanting slogans denouncing the leadership in the United States, Israel and the Palestinian Authority. A few hours later, in a Jewish neighborhood frequented by Arab shoppers, an angry mob of Orthodox Jewish youths attacked two Arabs, beating them “to a pulp.” The situation might have taken a turn for the worse had the two East Jerusalem residents not found refuge in the home of a Jewish family. This year’s uptick in violent attacks in Jerusalem has some commentators wondering if we might be witnessing the beginning of the third intifada. According to Haaretz, “Since the start of the year there have been five major attacks in Jerusalem, claiming the lives of 12 Israelis. During the first half of the year, the Shin Bet security service arrested 71 Palestinians from East Jerusalem suspected of being involved in attacks, compared to 37 such arrests during the entire year of 2007.” According to the report, Israel’s security forces are discussing possible crackdowns to help curb the violence. These attacks, Haaretz writes, “constitute a new challenge for Israel.” At present, security officials told Haaretz, “there is no means to counter them” (emphasis mine).

This morning, following the lead of Mayor Lupolianski, Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit told Israel Radio that heavy equipment operators from East Jerusalem should not be allowed to work in Jewish neighborhoods. He also suggested that Israel should revoke the residency permits of Jerusalem Arabs. According to Sheetrit, “dozens of terrorists” have sneaked into Israel thanks to family reunification laws put in place by Israel’s judicial system.
To better understand where this is all leading, read what we wrote after the first bulldozer attack earlier this month. •

Well, I wonder...We have had "Dozer-Nuts" in this country...one guy practically wiped out a whole town in Colorado. We have had jilted Cement Truck operators come by and fill up their girlfirend's car with concrete. And, when I was a kid, we had a guy use a construction crane to smash his boses office to smithereens with is boss and co workers inside...how no one was killed is still a mystery (I laugh when I think of the chaos it casued at the moment the crane bucket came smashing through the wall - it's only funny to me because no one was hurt, fortunately)

All were true acts of terrorism. If the motives are Islam vs the Infidel, or I-hate-you-because-you-took-my-land or I-hate-you-because-you-fired-me, really what difference does it make?

Life goes on, you watch out for more nuts with back hoes and you live life.

But, if you want to completely change society to make it so much safer...well, why not just lock everyone behind huge concrete walls and feed them porrige and call them a safe society.

I personally would figure on just going on with life...carrying a gun as these folks do to protect themselves and if any "adventure" comes my way...take care of business...again, as these people did.

The last dozer guy was working on a high end hotel/condo project. There's a lot demand and construction for empty high rise condos. Most are being bought by Americans with the intent of moving in but never do.

Same take here, but let's not forget those aren't necessarily the acts of nutjobs but of people obeying directives and orders according to a determined strategy.
The only problem is that to legally carry in this country, you have to fit more and more restrictive criteria.
I'm moving to Jerusalem next month, and it is not sure at all that I'll be able to secure my CCW license.
Now, finding oneself naked in those circumstances definitely isn't that funny.

Why is Israel moving towards more restrictive CCW? Seems armed citizens have been crucial in stopping a number of attacks in recent times. Are CCW permits being misused, or is it just a "cultural shift"?

No "cultural shift", but the effect of a political shift in the government and the administrations.
Since the murder of then prime minister Rabin in 1995, the legal possession of firearms has been more and more restricted, in the last 15 years, 250000 legal weapons have been put out of the system, by not renewing licences, changing criteria of attribution, etc, etc...
Result, nowaday, and with a few exceptions, only people living or working in the West Bank and people working for some administrations have the right to bear arms.
Further, the actual pinko governement has cancelled the local protection teams in the west bank communities, taking away rifles and SMG's of the first local responders, who now have to rely only on hand guns to protect their communities.
Now that I'm in Jerusalem, I'm in doubt I'll be able to keep my carrying licence, and even affraid I may not be able to keep my glock at all.

Hopefully, the next government will give us back some of the freedom that has been taken away from us, otherwise, maybe I should apply for political asylum in the USA p-)
