Jewish human rights group has urged the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, to block a major gas deal between a German company and Iran.
The Simon Wiesenthal Centre said Merkel should stop the 100-million-euro deal between German engineering concern Steiner and the Iranian government to build three gas liquefaction plants. The group claimed the deal would "embolden" an anti-Semitic regime and that it contradicted international efforts to isolate Iran and halt its nuclear programme.
A German government spokesman said the plans do not violate sanctions against Iran because the equipment would be built in Germany and then sent to the Islamic Republic.
