Mexico seeks military cooperation with Russia

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- President Vicente Fox says his country hopes to expand military cooperation with Russia, assembling some Russian helicopters here and importing a mixed civilian-military factory.

Speaking in the north-central state of Hidalgo on Wednesday, Fox said the arms issue would be "a principal topic" in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is scheduled to arrive on Monday.

Fox said possible projects include "the installation of a large maintenance center for helicopters" as the first step in a plan to assemble helicopters in the Gulf Coast state of Veracruz.

The Mexican president said he also hoped to sign an agreement with Putin for a plant that would assemble heavy machinery "for the military industry, heavy machinery for the construction industry, heavy and transport machinery for various uses that occur in a dynamic economy."

Fox said that factory was intended for Ciudad Sahagun, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Mexico City.

The president mentioned the arms plans during a speech dedicated to regional economic development and he did not elaborate on the projects.

Mexico largely avoided Russian equipment during the Cold War.

But since the collapse of the Soviet Bloc, it has begun to adopt some Russian equipment -- notably transport helicopters -- which is less expensive than that sold by the neighboring United States.

As a Mexican-American living in Arizona (tucson to be exact), I thought it was pretty funny. I can just see the front page of the Arizona Daily Star "USBP forces Russian made Hind helicopter to land, over 50 illegal immigrants inside."

But back to the article, I think that Mexico making an agreement with Russia is a good thing, it will provide jobs, something Mexico desparately needs. Well over 40-50% of the wealth is only controlled by about 15% of the population. Very sad situation in Mexico.

PS Felix, where in that line did he mention anything about Mexican illegal immigrants?

Mexico has a military?

Yeah, I actually had my wife stand beside 2 military fellas in Cozumel, Mx while I took a picture and she was a bit taller than both of them. She's only like 5'1. I'm not sure if they were Army or just customs agents, they were in all gray and black. If I find the picture Ill post it up for the lot of ya.

Back to topic. I really have no problem with russian equipment being manufactured in Mexico. As long as they take jobs away from Russians and not Americans , I got no beef with that.

I don't care if Mexico flies Mi-24's, SU-30's, drives T-90's and fires AK-47's.

Fox needs to start worrying about all of his people coming into the US.

My mother took the time, did the tests and paid the dues to get a green card to enter the country and feel these people should not be treated any differently.

My two cents....

At the rate American companies are out sourcing manufacturing jobs to Mexico the flow of immigrant's might slow to a trickle.

heh, you'd think that would have happened over the past 10 years.

I work at a detention facility here in New Mexico and we are actually holding more and more illegals as of late...

Are they all absorbed into the grey labour market or can they claim any benefits after they arrive. Is there any reason for the rise in illegal entry.

Midav

No benefits, sans medical and the bill is handed to the taxpayer.

As of right now, we have no idea why there is a rise of illegal activity and it also could be just an occasional spike... at least what I was told.

There are a few countries in central and south america that now fly Russian helos and I am guessing that the Russians are interested in creating a joint venture with the Mexicans to maintain and overhaul these birds to save the cost of transporting them all the way to Russia for it. As far as I can see this is good for Mexico and good for Russian helicopter exports to the region.

I would guess the most likely Russian firm involved would be Mil as they have sold their Mi-8, Mi-17 and Mi-26s widely in the region.

Let's not forget Canada. Canadian illegal aliens coming across the border, selling their Christmas trees, smuggling in marijuana and pirate DirecTV cards. Plus, one half of Canada actually speaks French, the devil's tongue.

Mexico needs the investment. Giving Mexicans skilled jobs in their own country can only help Mexico and its people.

lol, maybe i should say it to the multiple rows of illegals looking for under the table work on the way to my JOB.

so he said illegals would be using different transport to cross the border, how terribly insulting!

this news just in, cubans may be coming in by plane instead of boat........... huh? making fun of the transportation someone uses to come into your country illegally is insulting?
