BUT.. does the L2A7+ still use the crappy EMES 15 Gunners Main Sights? That thing is just as old as the leopard 2 project... I hope they've upgraded it... :-)

Leo 2A4 will be a test-bed platform to apply Aselsan TAKS FCS developed for Turkish national MBT program. I do not know whether Turkish officials will apply some armour changes to replace Leo2A4 German armor blocks with Roketsan armours. If officials need to name it, Most probably, It will be something like Leo-2T or A4T...

well most german armored vehicles are named after wild animals - and at some point you run out of names so you have to reuse them ;)

All Tank names that have been used in WW2 are a big no here in germany. The IFV Puma initially had a project name Panther, but that unleashed a ****storm with the lefties. Puma was also a WW2 vehicle but not so well known... which was ok for stupid people. ^^

Next german "Tank" will probably be a Puma based 120 mm gun light tank.

With such weight it is hardly light tank, rather a medium one, but in fact it will be another main battle tank but lighter, maybe with less ballistic protection at front but better overall protection, who knows.

You thinking wrong, normal cammo also doesen't reflecting, and vehicles are mostly covered by dust. Saab Barracuda MCS have other advantages, it is covering vehicles thermal signature and also covers vehicles from sun heat so there is much more comfortabale inside.

Besides Sweden also Australia, UK and USA are adopting this cammo for their tanks (US not know, but they showed on AUSA M1A2SEP v.2 with Barracuda MCS cammo so in near future it probably will appear on tanks in field).

Also I once saw a version of the Marder which has three "optical towers" (like the one from the Fennek) and an UGV inside. The sides of the "Marder" read PANTHER in bold black-red-gold lettering. It may not be an official designation as this vehicle is/was mostly a testbed for new technology but it's not forbidden either...

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) is modernizing the Canadian Leopard 2A4 CAN tanks previously acquired from German Army surplus. The first batch of 20 tanks was handed back to the Canadian Armed Forces yesterday (October 7, 2010) at the Bergen training ground in northern Germany. The modernized tanks are scheduled to equip the Canadian forces in Hindu-Kush in Afghanistan
The Canadians embarked on this latest upgrade of the tank in July 2009, anticipating their next deployment in the Afghan theater. The new version is specially designed for operations in Afghanistan based on experience gained by other Leopard 2 operators, including the Denmark and Canadian forces. (operating the Leopard 2A6M)
The main focus of the A4M CAN design was consistent protection of the crews, who are subjected to enemy attacks with powerful anti-tank projectiles and are in constant danger from mines and IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices). The starting point for the protection concept is outstanding protection from mines and good all-round protection. Furthermore, the capabilities of the new battle tank have been significantly extended by integrating a pioneer equipment interface. Mine rollers, mine ploughs and dozer blades allow the Canadian armed 3

Will the Canadian Army be using Leopard 2 tanks of both A4 (Ops)CAN+ standard and A6M CAN standard in Afghanistan? If so, I'm a bit surprised as I figured the 20 A6M CAN would be enough for intops use.

Anyway, they sure as hell look sweet. ;)

After Canada, Leopard 2A4 Sets Sites On South Africa

.............
Meanwhile, the Leopard 2A4 made its African debut at last month’s Africa Aerospace & Defence 2010 (AAD) exhibition in Cape Town, Leopard 2 120 mm gun producer Rheinmetall announced. The tank was presented during daily live demonstrations on a special test track and is probably a shoe in for replacing the South African National Defence Forces’ aging Olifant tank.

A few months ago I posted this in the Norwegian military pics thread. The article is from November 2009 and since then I've made some improvements on my original translation. ;)

The Leopards are coming

They are maybe not as fast as their namesakes from the animal world, but more powerful and far more effective in combat.

The King of the Forest: The very same day the tanks were delivered to the Telemark Battalion, they were brought with on an exercise. Photo: Logistics Organization, Norwegian Military

The Leopard tanks of the Norwegian Defense Force are ready for battle - as the users want them. And with a top speed of 68 km/h, the 52 tanks Norway purchased from the Netherlands in 2001 are still fast. The Telemark Battalion has now received the first delivery of two tanks with the second phase of upgrades (Fase-2).

- This is important to the Army, said battalion commander Lt.Col. Rune Solberg.

Round 2. Leopard 2 A4 NO have already been through one round of modifications, including new intercom, multirole radio and a new nitrogen-based fire distinguish system. Second round of modifications is supposed to customize the vehicles in line with the users needs and 46 tanks shall "under the knife".

- The first modifications consisted of preparing the vehicles for Norwegian conditions. Fase-2 is a further adaptation. In addition, both tower and hull will be thoroughly inspected and repairs will be carried out if needed, explains the coordinator for the Leopard 2, Tore Berg from the Combat Vehicle Office of the Norwegian Military’s Logistics Organization (FLO).

- This will ensure the operation of these vehicles in the future. We have listened to the users wishes in preparations for Fase-2, and customized the vehicles based on their input.

Local experts. The modifications are carried out by the unit of heavy maintenance and Romerike technical workshop (RTV). They also had the responsibility for the first phase (Fase-1) of upgrades and are already familiar with the tanks.

- The work has been challenging and we have experienced some delays. However, this has uncovered other matters that we have improved, says workshop manager Svend Holth.

- The Army will receive its first delivery of two slightly used tanks that are very well looked after, Holth guaranties.

Leopard 2. The German-built tank, which was first produced in 1979, is currently in use with the armies of a number of countries, including all the Nordic countries. The vehicle has a crew of four: driver, gunner, loader and commander. The tank crews of the Telemark Battalion took the vehicles out on an exercise the same day they received them.

- This is a memorable day. We have waited a long time for this. The Army has
reached a critically low level concerning competence on tanks, said Lt. Col. Rune Solberg.

I thought from the article that a production line was in operation in Spain to build factory new Leo 2's, not just refurbed, or is that incorrect? That was what I was wondering, if brand new tanks are still being built or if all of the ones around are just upgraded/refurbed old stock to new spec.

Nope, the correct designation is Leopard 2S or Strv122, but of course we can call it Leopard 2A5S (it is A5 variant) or Leopard 2 Improved, it was designed thanks to experciences of KMW when they worked on TVM Max prototype for Heer under Leopard 2 Improved program. Or something like that. ;P

The official designation is Leopard 2S. It's basically the design KMW built A6 on (w/o L55). They actually borrowed it to promote A6 abroad, as in the Greek tank competition.

01-22-2011, 06:08 AM
Isn't the German A6 essentially an A5 with L55? When the Germans borrowed the Strv. 122 to promote the Leopard 2 in other countries, wasn't that mostly due to the unique upgrades on the Strv. 122 of which many eventually became standard on both the A5 (Danish, proposed Norwegian) and A6 standard (Greek, Spanish)?

Something like I said. The Danes have upgraded their A4 to A5 standard. Their specific upgrade is a mix of different versions, similar to 122 and A6 in many ways. One of the things missing (at least according to some sites) is a Battlefield Management System.

Strv 122B Evolution Concept

New MBT122B Evolution with Unprecedented Protection

The Swedish MBT122 has already been recognized as one of the best protected main battle tanks in the world.

In a recent study program of the tank for the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) in Sweden, IBD Deisenroth Engineering succeeded in the development of a further improved protection dedicated to the tank. The concept is thereby designed to protect against the actual and future threats in theatre, especially in asymmetric and urban warfare.

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/1372/mbt122b20evolution20seidotjpg

IBD's focus in this development was the optimization of the protection against the actual threats in theatre: new variants of RPGs, IEDs and EFPs as well as keeping high protection against “conventional threats”. A new light weight and highly efficient SLAT armour was designed as an amendment of the protection concept. The effectiveness of the new solutions has been verified against all threats in a broad test campaign. Thanks to all these efforts the concept provides an outstanding 360 degree protection of the crew.

The completely modular design of the concept allows the use of any mixture of old and new protection modules. This solution is of great advantage in theatre with regard to maintenance and repairs.

Despite the improved overall protection level of the MBT 122B Evolution the weight increase of about 350 kg is only minimal such maintaining the high mobility of the tank. Also the width of the vehicle could be kept to exactly 4.0 m which is also an important factor for the use in urban environment.

Tank on the last pic is not Leopard 2A6M CAN but Leopard C2 with MEXAS armor package.

Obviously anti-HEAT armor.

It can be even ERA, I think that actually modern western ERA is inspired by Russian 4S24 multilayer reactive armor. I seen M19 ARAT-1 inside and it is definetly inspired by 4S24, same ERA is used in M2 IFV's, Israeli company Rafael designed new addon ERA for CR2 tanks and Warrior IFV's so I don't see a reason why cooperation with also German companys is not impossible, such ERA is light enough (BMP-3 with 4S24 can still swim) and can even stop tandem warhead HEAT ammo. Also Harkonnen said (on TankNet IRCC) that NII Stali was cooperated with Israel and US in ERA development.

Edit:

I mean that pic:

Details Emerge on Leopard 2, Marder Acquisitions

Chile paid 250,000 euros for each of 60 Leopard 2 tanks it acquired from Germany in 2009, according to a story in the German magazine Der Spiegel. The list price for Leopard 2s is around 3 million euros. But Chile spent 83 million euros on upgrades and repairs for the second-hand tanks. The cost for each Marder infantry fighting vehicle was 50,000 euros, compared to nearly 400,000 euros for a brand new Marder. But these vehicles were not in good shape, Der Spiegel noted. The magazine put the number of Marders purchased at 146, slightly more than the 138 previously reported. While the story mentioned 60 Leopard 2 tanks, the total purchase was for 132 tanks.

I'm new here, I greet all!!!

I found in the net long time ago, photos of Leo 3 (prototype). I can not find again that site.
This prototype was tested between 1993 and 2001. the further development was abandoned because the times have changed.
Thereby developed technology was later used in the case of modernization of LEO 2
I hope my first post ,is not a repost...sorry for my bad english...

That's the EGS (Experimentalwanne Gesamtschutz - Experimental chassis overall protection) and not a Leopard 3 prototype.

It's a damned shame.
For such a capable tank, it's a bit disappointing to see it's numbers dwindling (in Europe at least)

BTW: How many total Leo 2s does the Bundeswehr plan to keep after the cuts?

that many? I thought they recently declared that they would be reduced to something along the lines of 200. Well, 400 would give Germany the largest tank force in western europe with the Leclerc and Challenger reductions

that many? I thought they recently declared that they would be reduced to something along the lines of 200.I don't know, some info's gives total numbers of tanks as around ~300.

So I think that it will be something between 300 and 400 tanks.

Well, 400 would give Germany the largest tank force in western europe with the Leclerc and Challenger reductions

True, and probably Germany will not have any Leo2A4 at that time only Leo2A5/A6...

BTW it seems that probably there will not be any A5's in inventory also, more L55 guns are manufactured so rearming should be rather cheap and easy for such small numbers of tanks.

germany has always had the largest tankforce in western europe.

Reforms are still under review. But since there are rumors they cut the forces to around 158.000 troops, I guess we see the 300-350 tanks with probably 50 A7+

I don't understand why German government want to destroy historical rule of army in German society through centuries. For me even 400 tanks for country like Germany sounds like a bad joke or a nightmare. Country that once had one of the biggest armed forces and military power in the world now become country that can be compared to neutral Switzerland when we talk about military power and quantity of military mechanization in all aspects. It's a 4th soon maybe 3th economic power in the world (if the Japs don't manage to recover their economy after earthquake). For example first German neighbor Poland which is 5 times economically weaker than Germany will soon have larger military power than a country like Germany with population of 80 million people, so strong economy and such a huge military tradition(I respect and love POlish people but it's just comparison). If this continues I don't know how Germany will increase its influence in the world like guys like French or British doing especially in using their strong military power. Germany wake up!

Well You should consider the economical calculation.

There is no Soviet Union anymore, in nearest future there is no possibility of large conventional conflict in europe, so it is normal that military is reduced. It is more acceptabale for population that cuts in social support (for imigrant mostly ;)).

As for eastern German neighbore, Poland, well yes, we have ~900 tanks but most of them are old T-72M and T-72M1 tanks, many of them are good enough to go only for repairs. ;)

So in reality we have something around 400 tanks in battle ready condition, maybe more than 400.

It is normal in Europe, however I agree that such tendency is not good for anybody.

German military tradition has been dead for quite some time. From what I've heard they are probably one of the most pacifist nations in Europe (although that's likely a huge exagerration)

So now officially Greece, having about 370 Leo 2, 600 Leo 1 and 400 M48, has the most tanks among the European countries. Until now of course..

04-17-2011, 06:52 PM
IRCC Greece also had M60A1/A3 right? ;)

Well, we will see, maybe Poland will have more modern tanks if we buy more second hand Leo2's or in nearest future our own new MBT developed under Wilk/Maczek program will be fielded... if our briliant politicians start to use their brains of course... :|

heh, i wouldn't count on that. I recall the Poles developing a ground attack jet called the "Skorpion" in the early 90s. Supposed to be very rugged, designed with the events of Vietnam and Afghanistan kept in mind. Fugly as hell but it would have been the perfect aircraft for post-cold war conflict. It was cancelled in 94. Then there was the PT-94 tanks and the BWP2000....cancelled. But I would hope that I am wronge ;)

Damian90
04-18-2011, 03:55 AM
Well, at least PT-94 and BWP-2000 were not bad designs, here was even fully functional prototype of BWP-2000. In fact the problem is not in our designers, they can design everything, problem is rather in money or lack of some technologies... and the biggest problem are our politicians...:|

Upgraded Leopard 2 MBT set for firing trials
Aselsan has completed development of its privately funded Leopard 2 main battle tank (MBT) upgrade solution and firing trials are slated to commence in the second half of 2011.

The Leopard 2 Next Generation upgrade – on display at IDEF 2011 in Istanbul – could meet a potential Turkish Land Forces Command (TLFC) requirement to modernise its fleet of 298 ex-German Army Leopard 2-series MBTs, pending the introduction of the locally developed Altay tank.
http://i55.*******.com/dx0c5idotjpg
Aselsan has already upgraded 162 TLFC Leopard 1 MBTs with a new computerised day/night fire-control system (FCS) called the Volkan, and is also prime contractor for the Altay MBT FCS now under development by Otokar.
The Leopard 2 Next Generation features a new computerised FCS and a number of survivability enhancements. In addition, the vehicle’s combat weight has increased to 65 tonnes, but Aselsan claims this has not compromised the mobility of the original version. Meanwhile the existing MTU 1,500 hp MTU powerpack and the Rheinmetall 120 mm L/44 smoothbore gun have been retained.

Saw a link to a Chinese forum in a comment on augegeradeaus. Pics show a Leopard 2 on a trailer being transported by road in Chengdu, China. Does anybody have an idea about what's up with that?

is there some kind of arms expo in China where the tank might be exhibited? Seems like a newer A6 version...

Doesn't look right. Some shapes are wrong, bolts and screws are missing, "follow cross" is at the wrong position and so on and so forth. Besides that why should you transport the tank with the turret in that position?

Not to mention some extra wheels :) I guess they needed the object for some OPFOR training or something. It's quite an interesting find anyway.

FN MAG? Why?

These Leopards are ex-Dutch ones bought in 2001. The original plan was to install the MG3 on these tanks, but it was soon found out that the coax MG wouldn’t fit (the gun mantlet of the Dutch Leo 2 is customized for the FN MAG). As a result the FN MAG was kept because replacing the mantlets would require too much effort.

Since we acquired a good number of MAGs from the Dutchies we have also been starting to equip our Iveco LMVs with them. It fits better in the new Protector Light RWS than the MG3.

Is there a photo of a Leopard 2 A5/6/7 with a 0.50 cal HMG mounted on top of the main gun ala-Israeli style? or as its anti-aircraft gun? Thanks

Sad they had to be sold, couldn't they just keep them and store them till the economy improves? Personally I'd love my country to have some Leopard 2A6/7s. Even if we could afford it, we don't need it at this time and won't be running long...

Well actually there are not sold yet, they are stored in depot, but as soon as there are buyers they will be gone. They are out of business since May, the two battallions will be lifted in February.

What enemy the Netherlands confront? None if i am not mistaken. Why then do the Netherlands need a so well equipped and expensive to operate army?

We've had our eye on Hainan for a while now.....

Guys, here are some pictures I've finally recovered form my crashed hard disk. the pics are canadian Leopard II tanks during hamkari in september and october 2010 in the Panjwa'i; east of kandahar city. That was an operation like Moshtarak but without all the media coverage. Before you ask, no Hi Res available, I took the pics with my IPod Touch form the OCC-D compound and from the top of a mastiff.169697

Is that an actual camo used by the Bundesheer or was it just for an event or a celebration? I can't imagine the terrain where it would be useful

Actually I read we have ~260 Leos in the Bundeswehr. I do prefer the 400 number though, however some units are being converted away from Leos into Mechanized Infantry units. My unit is safe so far as we are a training unit.

The Leopard-Camo was specially for the Open Day by the 14. PzBtl / Austrian Bundesheer at their HomeBase at Wels .

To the Discussion of sells Leopard 2 :
Nederland Landmacht had closed their two Leopard 2 Units , The Austria Bundesheer had reduce their two Btl and had in the Moment only 2 Companies.
So the German Bundeswehr reduce their Leopard 2 fleet of 250 ( +/- 25 ) .
My personelly Discussion : The Gouverment reduce and would by reduce the Budget for Military . I mean , the Safety and Peace did not go on with
good words . We msut have a hard stabilisited Option for other Times....and if we reduce now these Units we had lost it for all time . So i see with different Eyes these Situation . If we had Billions of Euros for the Money-Mafia by the Big Bank Players.....we must have a little part of these Billions for our Freedom and Peace . But the see not the Reality.....
Good bless our Countries

Ours (445) went to; Austria (114), Canada (100), Norway (52) and Portugal (37). The remaining ones are for sale (Indonesia?) as well.

I really miss a scenario where Europe needs more than 1000 MBTs.
250 top maintained tanks with well trained crews are still a good force.
