I decided to create this thread and post this news, because a lot of people in "Russian" threads speaking about "depopulation" and "50 mil of Russians in 2050". And frankly speaking I'm a little tired of it.

http://www.medportal.ru/mednovosti/news/2008/08/04/birth/ (on Russian)

Translation of important facts:

In first half of 2008 birthrate in Russia increased considerably. Also increased number of families having second and third child. This info was presented by Minister of Health and Social Development Tatiana Golikova.

In first 6 months were registered 801 000 of births, its on 7.8 percent more than in first 6 months of 2007.

From another news:

In first 5 months population decreased on 0.08 percent or 119.900.
It is on 46 000 less than in such period of 2007, because of death rate decrease and increased migration.
Because not all people are understand this numbers, I give some as comparison:

In 2005 population decrease was ~720 000.
In 2006 population decrease was 687 100.
In 2007 population decrease was 238 000.
My prognosis:
2008: -150 000.
2009: -50 000.
2010: +50 000.

If these trends will be maintained, probably in 2010 population in Russia start to increase. I thought before that increase would start in 2012, but it can happen a lot early.

Actually i am curious why the Russian government did not just resort to mass immigration to solve its demographic problems like what Canada and Australia is doing, I mean for its size Russia has a very low population density especially in the Far East.

Most likely because they do not wish to facilitate the total collapse of an already tenuous demographic balance.

Not to start some sort of flame war, but any stats on the ethnic background of the Russians having children?

I know my Russian friends all laughed/cried at Putin's "cash for kids" program assuming it would be mostly Central Asian immigrants pumping them out at record pace.

Asking Russians to wear seat belts, stop smoking, stop drinking and hold on eating heavy foods. In essence....stop being Russians.

Immigrants are not much for Easting, they tend to stay by all means in already overcrouded Moscow, also Govt is afraid of Europe scenario, so they encourage Russians to go, or stay in Siberian region without much sucsess for now, but slowly thingies are moving. Now govt pumping money in central siberian citys like Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk, Khabarovsk, Vladivostok etc just for people to stay there - infrastructure, kindergardens, schools, jobs etc it's not a smooth run - corruption, bureaucracy etc, but the huge number of Moscow inspections from all branches, scares the sh/t out of even fattestarsed functionaries here, so as i said before thingies are mothing

These bans never seem to work. Finns learnt to drink strong alcohol like sponges too during state imposed alcohol ban. Even after that beer was thought to be more harmful than vodka

Well.. Medvedev is stuck between a rock and a hard place on this issue.. Raising prices or lowering the amount of vodka will both backfire while not doing anything will just worsen the problem. The school system just needs to educate the new generations of dangerous of alcohol.. But as long as Russian men will make toasts "for health" then nothing will change.

I think the best way is to favour mild alcoholic beverages like beer in taxation and impose heavier taxes on strong alcohol.

Btw. There's nothing wrong with making toasts for health. It's not harmful. Drinking full bottle of vodka every other day is.

Geez. Of course it isn't healthy to drink humongous amounts. Russians know it too - they are not retarded. And if they drink more it's propably because they want to, not because they think it's healthy

As a sidenote, it's normal around here to drink for "health" too but it's just a saying. It really doesn't mean much these days..basicly same as saying "cheers".

I dont argue against that. But it still does not change the fact that alcohol is killing off Russian population. And instead of trying to make people f*ck like rabbits Russian government should lower the death toll of Russian men.

Well, they've had time to procreate before that age of 61 so it doesn't matter much if they die at that point for any of the possible xyz reasons. Besides, they are bordering pension age so not so many work years left. In any case, at least the government isn't burdened by pensions this way p-)

I disagree.. The question lies in what families usually get many children. Many Russians especially young ones are more westernised and their birthrates are quite low.. Instead you have these families with alcoholics who breed like crazy to get the benefits of having a child.

Vodka alcoholism is dying off with it's generation nowadays, it's a rare sight today to see guys from 16 to35 years with vodka, only on ocasions like birthday or V-day, new alco trend is beer, in summer time you'll see teenagers with beer bottles practically everywhere in eveneng TV commercials you will be swarmed by "happy teenagers", or "tough guys" cracking a beer at sunset, or on the beach. So beer is a new alco mass killer, and a problem, duma is trying to stomp on it, but they have serious lobby, so methinks this laws will be enforced by Govt. As for smoking well those churches and "Aleksii the 2nd" - Maybachs ain't built on "babushkas copecs" Chirch had (?have now dunno?) right on untaxed import of cigarettes, gangsters in 90-s were building churches not from pureness of their hearts, but as payoff for operating under chirch license, so if hell realy exists those bearded guys gona burn good and proper. and for seat belts fine for it jumped from 2$ to 20$ so even in shaded black SUVs nowadays guys are belted not only with golden chains anymore.

It's nothing new that less educated, working class people have more kids than those who are career oriented and educated. It's propably same in all western countries..and the working class often abuses alcohol more often. These are things that tend to fix themselves to some extent if even the lowest segment of society can afford decent living and educational possibilities. Other than that there's really not that much that can be done. Stupid people have always made more kids and world hasn't ended so far p-)

Dats true, but not 100% you can't cash "parentage grant" you can spend it only on kindergarden, school, and baby healthcare payments via bank. Too much power in the wrong hands at times. About a month ago a friend of mine got an $800 fine for driving the wrong way on a virtually unmarked 150m stretch of sideroad at the Pulkovo airport that connects two parking lots. Definite setup, the police were sitting there in ambush. It was the 4th violation of that type that day by unsuspecting drivers he later learned. Cash machine. He took it to court, no chance.

As a frequent visitor to Russia I'm often amazed at how much sh!t people take on an everyday basis without complaint... from the militia hassles to the SUV drivers who wouldn't stop at a pedestrian crossing for their own grandmother, to the lady at the post office who does her nails while the line in front of her booth stands in silent obedient fury... seems like you can't accomplish anything without yelling at somebody.

It's not my place to try to change anything and I certainly pray that Russia never becomes a PC cesspool of litigation like the US or a hyper-regulated self-serving welfare buffet like much of Europe, but I do expect the "average guy" in Russia to someday realize it's not 1996 anymore and he doesn't have to let himself be pushed around by everybody who thinks they are "big boss". A little social respect for one another would be nice.

That is good news. Not to start some sort of flame war, but any stats on the ethnic background of the Russians having children?

I know my Russian friends all laughed/cried at Putin's "cash for kids" program assuming it would be mostly Central Asian immigrants pumping them out at record pace.

It does work amongst ethnic Russians, not only in regards to births, but also many more people are adopting children.

Concerning the food – healthier/more natural than in the West.

Drinking habits changed dramatically since the 90’s, certainly less vodka consumption.

What i am saying is that you dont need to drink alcohol to understand what its all about.

As a matter of fact, you do need to drink alcohol to understand what it is all about.

Give it a try :)

Yes i agree but you can't kill "Sovok" in people in just 18 years, step by step little by little, is always a best way, over SU-style with 7-feet straight steps.

And you forgetting a juicy part, it's still a land of oportunities and awesome babes, so get money and get laid, never been in USA, but Europe in comparison is sooo boring, well, not Portugal, but only because of girls.

there was Bruno Bozzetto cartoon Europe vs Italy just replace Italy with Russia and you got the full picture http://www.infonegocio.com/xeron/bruno/italy.html

Cool cartoon BTW...

I find one of the most amazing social skills is the babushka's ability to creep her way forward in line millimeter by millimeter with her fat-padded body and Soviet scowl. She can be 5 places behind you... reach in your pocket to pull out your phone and she's somehow maneuvered herself in front of you in less than a minute... respect.

Actually i am curious why the Russian government did not just resort to mass immigration to solve its demographic problems like what Canada and Australia is doing, I mean for its size Russia has a very low population density especially in the Far East.

Lets say, that there are already 10-20 millions of illegal imigrants from Central Asia. They havnt good education, poorly speak Russian language. They cant afford to buy a home, cant have a good job. Allowing them to stay is to enforcing poverty and crime. I belive that current immigration policy is good.

Well, non Russian etnicity always had bigger birthrate that Russians. But today Russian families have more children and balance is fairly good.

Try and type Russian girls in google.
So sad...
Edit: But beautifull girls..

I dont think mail bribes are exist today in Russia. In 90x - yes. But today it's much easier to have rich husband in Russia, than to go somewhere else.
All such sites are outdated :)

Like Ordie said.. Russia needs to root out its alcoholic "addiction".. Its just ridiculous that Russian men live up to average 61 years of age.

There is no alcoholic addiction. It is stupid "western press" cliche. In Russia even in 90x alcoholic consumption wasn't much than in Europe.
Today I dont even remember when I saw people drunk on the streets.

The key in improving the numbers is to mitigate the preventable death rate.
Asking Russians to wear seat belts, stop smoking, stop drinking and hold on eating heavy foods. In essence....stop being Russians.

Smoking is a real killer. Unfortunately I dont see that goverment encourages people to stop smoking. To bad :(

BTW, you must understand that so low average age is a mix of several factors. Its smoking, poor health support by oneself, 90x stress and so on.
Just "drinking" had nothing to do with it.

Then tell your relatives to smack you with something in the forehead.
Is it a coincidence but I haven't heard so much dirt about former country of origin by anybody (this forum included) except the russian "runaway jews". Your last name is Nevzlin or Berezovsky, right? ;)

"Suvorov" - writer, it took a lot of Real historians to down his BS fairytales

And Russian history is not white and cudly, so I understand Russofobia from Poland, Finland, Hungary and list continues. What amuses me more is normal attitude from Germany and US, maybe coz they're big guys and not in business of cheap insults.
