Troops uncover explosive belt in Ramallah, arrest would-be bomber: army
JERUSALEM (AFP) Jun 06, 2004
Israeli troops uncovered a large suicide belt near the West Bank city of Ramallah late Saturday, two days after arresting a would-be suicide bomber in a refugee camp in Nablus, a military source said early Sunday.
The belt, carrying 25 kilogrammes (55 pounds) of explosives, was found outside a United Nations school in Silwad, just east of Ramallah, the source said.
The device was detonated in a controlled explosion which damaged the school wall, she said.
On Thursday, troops had arrested an 18-year-old man in the Askar refugee camp in the northern West Bank city of Nablus, who was intending to use the belt in a suicide attack, she said.
Another seven men were arrested in connection with the planned attack, all of whom were "linked to the Tanzim", she said, referring to the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a radical offshoot of Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement.
