LISBON (*******) - Two bank robbers were shot by Portuguese police on Thursday after they held hostages for eight hours in a bank branch in central Lisbon, local media reported.
The hostage drama in a European capital unaccustomed to violent crime ended when police snipers fired at the robbers after two hostages managed to escape from their captors inside the branch, the Lusa news agency reported.
A third hostage managed was released earlier.
State RTP television showed one of the hostages rush out of the bank doors, and heavily armed police storming into the building shortly afterwards.
Police were not immediately available to comment.
One of the robbers was killed and the other was taken to hospital, Lusa reported. One of the hostages was wounded.
Police had cordoned off the site on Thursday afternoon and tried for hours to negotiate the release of the hostages before the violent end to the attempted robbery.

Well it seems now the family of one of the robbers is considering filling a lawsuit against the Portuguese police for unnecessary use of deadly force.
Some Brazilians are also saying that the robbers were shot at because they were not Portuguese :bash:
