I believe it's the 8.5x version of the AN/PVS-10 day/night scope.

an/pvs 10 - day/night scope on what appears to be the M24 or M40 (the high cheek pad).
Either or, it is 7.62x51 (.308 win)

Interesting rail system. Don't see what you'd need all that for. Well, maybe an AN/PAQ or AN/PEQ LAD.
That M24 was developed to fire either the .308 Winchester or .300 Winchester Magnum rounds, with modifications done by the unit armorer. As you can see, the M24 uses a Remington 700 LONG action, not the typical short action for .308's. The long action is long for the obvious reason of being able to accept the longer .300WinMag. rounds. I still haven't heard much about them actually using it in .300WinMag., but it exists.

Is the shooter SF? I just ask because of his head wear and his mustache.. Any place to get a hi-res of this? It's an excellent pic.

the US Army does use the .300 Win Mag, and if you have ever shot it, it is like holding on to your girlfriend while you are tagging her from behind and all your friends burst it. While it is a ton of fun, it is going to leave a mark.

Yeah I know that they have a lot of kick I shoot both .300 WinMag and the .338 Magnum mainly for Elk hunting. I remember see some thing on TV about army match team that shoots the .300 Win Mag. You should shoot the .300 H&H Magnum. :)
