:)I hold an unfashionable view that Slobodan Milosevic effectively made the best of an historical mess and that the problems of the former Yugoslavia (Kosovo, unhappy Serbian populations in Croatia and Bosnia would have been beyond the wit of most leaders to solve. The agreement that he struck with NATO to end the war over Kosovo allowed the Serbs to continue a long term political and diplomatic struggle for the province. As for the Krajina and Bosnian Serbs, Milosevic more or less got a solid deal for the BS at Dayton with the exception of Sarajevo and the Krajina Serbs was a lost cause that if Milosevic had sent in the VJ forces would have meant a full scale war with Croatia, in other words, plunging the whole of the Balkans into another bloodbath. They, the Krajina Serbs should have settled alot earlier when they saw the balance of forces turning against them (at the start of 1995). Disagree? Let's keep it civil and clean.:)

Yes, and his economic policies revived the ailing Serbian economy. His family, contrary to some foolish propagandists, never indulged in tobacco, oil, and weapons smuggling. Government-owned banks never impoverished the citizens of Serbia to a level yet unheard of, and the world's greatest ever hyperinflation never happened.

Oh, no.

He was also always called "The Serbian NAtionalist", but he was just and old communist.
He was against everything that good Serbian stands for, against Church, Monarchy, he never changed socialist symbols, flags, anthem...
He was a criminal, riding on a wave of nationalism, same as Alija and Tudjman.
And yes, he was a traitor and he sold out Bosnian Serbs, Croatian Serbs and Kosovo Serbs.

Milosevic is the best example of an opportunist taking a hold over the masses. The wars could have been avoided if they relied on common sense, something which they all obviously lacked.

Yes......to his people.

Not only a traitor, but the worst menace and disgrace in the same time. The man screwed the country for decades to come, allowed his son to become a criminal No.1 during the 90s, achieved to put the lasting stain on the Serbian name (wrongfully or rightfully so) in the international circles, and made people's lives so miserable that it turned the stable, relatively progressive country into the European pariah-land. Were the hell to exist he'd enjoy it along with his communist pals Alija, Franjo and all the others responsible. And not to forget to include the major players from the "international team" as well.

What was the general consensus regarding Milosevic around 1991-1995?

Krajina is Croatian land and always will be, Croats were in the Balkan area before the Serbians.

There should have been no dispute on who "owns" the Krajina region and Milosevic is a pathetic selfish bitch. It's Croatian land.

Whoa, dog. Chill. I don't think this was about who owns the Krajina at all. I thought it was specifically about milosevic - like it says in the subject line...

you cannot say Croatians came to the Balkans before Serbs because, we didnt come to the Balkans as Croatians or Serbs but as Slavs..as one people, then over years different regions were formed and many lived independently from others. And later different religions came into the game, making bigger issues to the Slavic states in the Balkans. Serbs, Croatians, Slovens, Bosnians, Montenigros..lol and Macedonians are one people who cannot learn to live with each other sadly ..it has been tried with Yugoslavia only to backfire down the track, just making things even worse in the end.
But language and tradition is all the same..only differences are religion.

I would say, about 20% see him positively, everyone else as a worst dissaster.

Also, election results are telling the story.
Milosevic was a master of manipulation election laws, so the he can rule, even when he gets only 40% or even less. Majority to proportional, than being Serbian to being YUgo president...

Here are the Results of the elections in
1990 Presidental-
SPS(Milosevic) 46.1
Opposition 53.9%

Parlamentary
Milosevic SPS 28.88%

1996-
Milosevic SPS 34.2%
Parlamentary 36.7%

1997-
Parlamentary-
SPS-34.2%

Presidental-
Milan Milutinovic (SPS)-43.43%

2000-
Parlamentar-
SPS 13.3%

Presidental-
Milosevic 35.79%
