View Full Version : US Navy "Snooper"
I was talking with my grandfather about his service in the Korean War. He told me he was (what they called then back then) a "snooper". Some kind of intelligence person in the USN. Told me some stories which made him sound like some kind of force recon for the navy. I'm curious to what kind of role the "snooper" played during the Korean War. I wasn't about to ask him, good sense he doesn't want to talk about it (a knife fight left him with a slash on his back from his shoulder to his hip). Also mentioned that his role on the aircraft carrier was jumping off the ship and swim to rescue pilots who bailed out nearby. Anybody remind me of what they were called too (he told me once but i forgot).

During the Korean conflict, that type of work was done by men of the Navy's UDT (Underwater Demolition Teams). The forerunners of the US NAvy's SEAL teams.
There are many accounts of them performing operations in North Korea, during the conflict, typically inserting by boat behind North Korean/Chinese lines to conduct recons, engage in direct action missions and other covert ops. They also handled the more traditional UDT amphibious landing missions as well.

my father would tell me stories like this but that took place mostly in central and south america. He was a Major in the USMC and then went to the Navy and ended up working in Washington DC before he retired.
Half the stuff he said sounded made up tho..

Wait....he was a Marine Major, but then transferred to the Navy and was a rescue swimmer? Huh?

woops, no rescue swimming... just sneaking around in the dark and intelligence. Thats what I don't get, why would a Major in the Marines go to the Navy to do that stuff.
Even with his old man gut the guy could swim like a fish, a really big fish... more like a manatee actually.

told me one story where him and his teammates had to use wood reeds to breath as they hid underwater as enemy soldiers walked by (his term for enemy soldier i will not say).
