SEC. 204. MAKING VOTING IN FOREIGN ELECTION A BASIS FOR AUTOMATIC LOSS OF CITIZENSHIP.

(a) In General- Section 349(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1481(a)) is amended--

(1) by striking the period at the end of paragraph (7) and inserting `; or'; and

(2) by adding at the end the following new paragraph:

`(8) voting in an election in a foreign country.'.

(b) Effective Date- The amendments made by subsection (a) shall apply to voting that occurs after the date of the enactment of this Act.

This is a stupid provision, as there are a number of dual nationals here in Australia with US and Australian citizenship. Their only option is to keep paying the fine for not voting, or automatically lose their US citizenship, as voting here is compulsory.

That could potentially hurt every dual citizen in the US regardless of the legality of their presence here. A stupid provision by any measure. One of the greatest strengths of American foreign relations is that every ethnic group on the planet has ties to the US. Why limit the ability of US citizens to play a role in foreign elections?

Stupid.
Stupid.
Stupid.

Also, Lou Dobbs and all his populist ilk are worthless oxygen thieves. We need tons of immigrants in this country just to keep our social security system afloat, not to mention their value in invigorating our civil society by constantly bringing new ambitious people into our system. Another one of Americas great strengths is our vibrant civil society, and the competition and innovation which that vibrant society results in. As in, "you better work your ass off because there are people outside who brushed aside the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse just to get a sliver of a chance to take your job."

I hate entitled people. Actually, strike my last, I hate people in general. Bah.

Difficult to enforce.

Moreover, certian countries such as Argentina does not recognize loss of citizenship status. Once an Argentine citizen, is an Argentine citizen for life no matter if that person were to be a nationalized US Citizen.

Moreover, its very popular among families to aquire EU Passports through grandparents to give more educational and work options to many US youths.

a piece of sh*$!

Amnesty for illegal alien gang bangers.

Amnesty for absconders.

I don't need to hear any more. Total slap in the face for any "suckers" who actually follow the law and try to obtain citizenship by the rules.

Any 'benefit' illegal aliens bring to the this country is outweighed by a negative. Of course it would be irrational to try to kick them all out, but it is even more irrational to give them legal status.

I'm not anti-immigrant by any means, but the problem with this is that it rewards illegal activity.

I'm pretty sure the US does not recognize "dual citizenship" per se. -Can't speak for Australia, of course. I suppose there are many people sitting on the fence when faced with such a potentially life-altering decision.

To be fair the legal system is so broken you can’t blame people for trying otherwise. I have Mexican friends who came to Canada, couldn’t make it, he had a green card and they went to Seattle, they have done very, very well for themselves pulling in 6 figures incomes each, yet despite trying to get the proper paperwork for the last 8 years with the help of a lawyer she still does not have legal status and is afraid if she leaves they won’t let her back in. They are squeaky clean and type of people you want as neighbours yet they have to live with this fear over their heads.

He does not have an ilk - I'm surprised they still give him a show. He's not populist, he just did better talking about business, which is how he cut his teeth nationally in the US. Why he is talking about anything beyond how long CEOs take for bathroom breaks is beyond me. You have to hand it to the guy that his gimmick is more transparent than most of his peers in the opinion-making business, who suck and make money for erection-enhancement pillls on cable TV, but do little else to enhance civic discourse.

LOL. I can swing to all that.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. There are large number of dual US/Israeli citizens in the US, some who have served the United States governnment in senior positions. The US does NOT prohibit dual citizenship, it just gets upset if you show allegiance to a nation that is averse to the United State's interest and that act is consistent with you renouncing your US citizenship. The US believes that its obligations and duties trump all others, which is something to be expected.

Now there is an additional law which says, vote in a foreign election, and you are fubared and lose your US citizenship.

That's interesting - I would have to reread everything and then ask an attorney because all of this sounds like the implications are not clear for neophytes like me. With developments over the last 7 years here in the US, it seems like we're all still learning.

oh crap, aren't you an attorney?

Agreed. So let’s do it in an orderly fashion instead of the chaotic, wink-wink, nudge-nudge, business tax-evading way it is now.
