US troops backed by warplanes engaged late Friday with a "fairly substantial number of anti-coalition militants" some 60 kilometres (37 miles) southeast of Tarin Kowt, capital of troubled Uruzgan province, Lieutenant Colonel Tucker Mansager said on Saturday.
"Our coalition force returned fire and then called in air support," he told a news conference. "That air support did in fact expend some rounds."
Mansager said coalition forces suffered no casualties in the operation but he was unable to provide information on deaths or injuries among the militants.
An Afghan official said eight militants had been killed and a US soldier wounded in an engagement late Friday involving hundreds of Afghan and coalition troops in Deh Chopan district of Zabul province, which is about 90 kilometres east of Tarin Kowt.
