Actually it has been around since 2003....as part of the SOPMOD block two upgrade...

not only SOCOM, Army also bought into this system to replace the older PEQ2. the Army contract are split betwen the DBAL-2 and the ATPIAL with higher % of ATPIAL.

I also believe the Marines are now using the ATPIAL.

My National Guard unit just got them, they seem to be pretty nice so far. A good improvement over the PEQ-2's I'm used to.

I saw a couple of these mounted on some m4's at Mccord AFB. It was at the combat controller station during the Thunderbirds air show. Pretty cool i guess, didnt really get to mess around with them.

SMGLEE could you spare me a moment for a couple of questions?
P is for Pulse? What does it do then? Does the IR laser pulsate?

Great detail shots!

Its for program.....you can set the blinking rate of the laser...there is a green LED in the back that will indicate the blinking rate.

The knob functions are
1. Visible Red laser
2. off
3 Program
4. IR-Aiming laser in low power
5 IR dual-Aiming and illum in low power
6. IR-Aiming in high power
7. IR-Ilum in high power
8. IR dual-Aiming and illum in high power

The dome switch act just like the older PEQ2, press it once to trun on and off like a monemtry switch and press it twice qucikly for consistant on.

the blue allen screw are not supposed to be removed inside the CONUS since the laser are much too powerful, someone told me once that it can literally lite a cigarette, but I boubt that.

the blue screw can be store on the side of the body.

the mount require a little blue lock-tite to keep it securely.

SMGLee

Thanks for the information. I didn't knew much about it except for the name. I searched the net a bit for info but it's not easy to find. It sparkled my curousity. I can see the advantage it has over an enemy that's not in the nvg age yet.

Can you program the blinking rate from the peq's functions or do you have to hook it to a computer? And for what is the blinking rate used? The only thing i can think of is id in case of close air support.

Thanks for the great info and photo's.

SMGLee-thanks once again for sharing your great pics of cool gear. That PEQ-15 is sure an improvement from the AN/PEQ-2. This new one is more compact, high-tech and comes in FDE color! I wish they made the manual activation pad/switches more ergonomic. They're kind of blocky. (P.S.-FDE is the new black!)

And you know this from personal, hands on experience right? Actually having used both systems? Quit repeating stuff you've read online on this and other forums. Stay in your lane.

Looks like you enjoyed that tour mate;)

Do you know why there is 2 buttons? are both connected to the ATPIAL or is there some other OPSEC kit thats also connected to on of the other plugs?

M4Guru

It plugs into the M3X flashlight...which is junk. You can splice that cable into a Surefire plug, though, and it works great. I like the two button pad a lot, it has gotten great end user reviews and is very handy.
