Hello,

While reading Chapter Three of Viktor Suvorov's INSIDE THE AQUARIUM he describes some interesting kit and clothing.

One of the items the Spetsnaz soldier has is a top coat-with a long "skirt" that goes down almost to his heels which can be buttoned on to the coat.

The purpose of this is to avoid wearing padded trousers which will cause the wearer to overheat while marching but a long coat will not. Keep warm but not too warm.

The "skirt" can be easily unbuttoned and rolled away when not needed.

Has anyone ever come across this type of garment/Russian phrase for it or a pic of it or has any suggestions on where to research it?

Maybe some of our Russian contributors know about this garment?

Suvorov also describes an anorak garment which is apparently the SPOSN Gorka pullover version but this is separate from the top coat description.

Sounds like a low tech and reliable solution to keeping in body heat without overheating.

Thanks for any help.

The item they are talking about is the warm saver suit.

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry-it's not the warmsaver suit-Suvorov does mention this underwear but he also mentions a top coat with a detachable "skirt" buttoned on/off to aid in keeping body warmth.

The design concept is an interesting piece of kit which is why I am trying to find out about it.

Thanks.

keep in minf that Rezun (aka Suvorov) is not a very reliable author.

spetsnaz garment (boots, clothes, underwear, gear) that Resun mentioned existed only in his imagination.
There is a mesh baselayer underwear in modern Russia like Resun mentioned - http://www2.splav.ru/GoodsDetail.aspx?gid=2007-09-27+10%3a46%3a37.000181&cat=2005-05-17+17%3a16%3a08.600102 but it wasnt widely used in USSR. Other spetsnaz garments in his book is bullsht.

Interesting-I thought that perhaps some kit might have been produced in small amounts and only for limited issue to certain personnel hence it being unknown.

While researching this topic I once did come across on the web a pic of what was termed airborne/Spetsnaz boots..the boots were like a work boot with a very thick nonmarking sole. Interesting part that they laced up the front...but also had laces at the heel/boot rear to adjust the fit/volume of the boot. Certainly an interesting concept whether it was practical or too costly.
