TBILISI, Georgia - The U.N. says Russian soldiers are telling thousands of refugees in Georgia who want to return to their homes that their security can't be guaranteed.

Melita Sunjic, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner of Refugees in Georgia, says that it was not clear if Russian soldiers were actually preventing refugees from returning, but the warnings by the troops effectively block them.

Some 2,000 refugees are at UNHCR camps in Gori, and possibly thousands of others are in the region.

All hope to return to villages that are in the "security zones" that Russia has claimed for itself. Many are on Georgian territory south of the border with the separatist region of South Ossetia.

In about ten minutes this thread will be swarmed by Russkyies supporters from the 1st mp.net Russky Battailon, saying that those news are:

1) False
2) Tendencious
3) Saaskavili (or whatever) is him, in truth, that is preventing georgian to go home
4) Russian peacekeeper are not for granting security of people (just witnessed that phrase in another thread... then Russky peacekeepers what PEACE KEEP???)
5) A black US man named "John Holly Jones Jamal The Third", from Texas as deducted by his passport, is discouraging displaced Georgians to go home

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) - Russian troops remaining in Georgian territory are effectively preventing Georgians from returning to their homes, a U.N. representative said Saturday. Melita Sunjic, spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commissioner of Refugees in Georgia, said that although it was not clear if Russian soldiers were actually preventing refugees from returning, the warnings by the troops effectively block them.

"If they say 'we can't guarantee your safety,' you don't go," she told The Associated Press.

Some 2,000 refugees are at UNHCR camps in Gori, and possibly thousands of others are in the region, hoping to return to villages that are in the so-called "security zones" that Russia has claimed for itself on Georgian territory.

Who cares?

So some Georgians don't have a place to go home to. Big deal. The damage the Georgians did there are plenty of South Ossetians in the same predicament but for them it is worse because they probably not only can't get to their houses, their houses are probably not there anymore, and family members are probably dead too.

US aide will solve all of Georgias problems... as long as it doesn't all go into Saakashvilis pockets.

2000 is a bit more then some. But people become homeless, permanet, or just for some time, in all wars.

Unfortunately those Georgians pay for the stupid moves of their leaders........troublesome but what to do? Returning to their homes in Ossetia would ask to be lynched by the mob that tries to find people to blame

Those people didnt do anything wrong, they are civilians, it was the army and the goverment that attacked south ossetia.
Looks like you are not smart enough or dont have common sense.

As a Russky supporter from the 1st mp.net Russky Battailon I say:
I dont give a f about those poor georgians!
They should thank their leader, Saaka, for beginning of this war.
In Russia we say, "a bad peace is better than a good war"
They lived in their villages, having some small firefights with osetians, just a routine for 15 years.
After what happened, do you really believe that ossetians will let them to live on S. Osetia? Remember serbs, who f-ed up and what kosovo's serbs suffered and what happened then. Its hard to live near a nation that hates you so much... after what Saaka did, Osetia and Abkhazia is gonna be pro-russian for decades.

Peacekeeping includes protecting citizens also of the attacking side. That is also one of our main goals as a participant in the conflict, in de facto control of the territory. All crimes that happen there are our problem and our responsibility.

You make our troops look bad with comments like this, since people might actually think that you have anything to do with our army.

An interesting video from France 24 on the situation in that region. The speech is indeed very subdued on both sides, but leaves some room for interpretation :

Wow, Stepan. You sure you're 25 ?

But hey, it's nice to know what "maintaining law and order" means for you as a Russian.

I see the world without pink glasses. Maybe somewhere in Africa, there are some real peacekeeping ideals, but in Kosovo and Caucasus its just a big countries supporting one side against another.

And it's okay with you if civilians die as a result, through a little ethnic cleansing, or through looting, or anyhting else ? Basically, one could re-open ovens and that wouldn't bother tyou as long as it's the right (or wrong) kind of people who go there ?

Wow and double-wow, Stepan.

Russian soldiers don't kill S.Osetian georgians. Things that osetian militia do - doesnt bother me. And dont you think that it is much safier for georians to live in Georgia as refugies than returning to territory where they risk their lives everyday?

I am agree with you and all this is…sadly. The post-war reality is much more difficult then we wish. I don’t know how ossetians and Georgians can live together after everything what happened. Probably it is hardly to guarantee their security now.
This is sad situation.

The U.N. says Russian soldiers are telling thousands of refugees in Georgia who want to return to their homes that their security can't be guaranteed.

They are telling this for their safety. Imagine Georgians living around thousands pissed off Osetians. Should Russians need to put soldiers to each Georgian house there? Is this a guarantee of their safety? Someone will be killed and we'll here again all BS we already heared about Russian troops, president, people etc...

Another reason - also russian authorities don't want clashes with osetians. There is no any benefit in shooting your loyal friends.
P.S. Russian soldiers had to guard georgian P.O.W.s from osetians because osetian civilians wanted to torn P.O.W.s apart; I cannot imagine what happened to georgian military who were captured by militia before russians entered a Tshinval - poor bastards...

2000 is a bit more then some. But people become homeless, permanet, or just for some time, in all wars.

It is more than the Georgians killed trying to take SO back by force. It is a lot less than the 30,000 or so that fled into NO when the fighting began.
Perhaps when they next get to vote for a leader they might not pick such an idiot?

As I said there is no need to worry about those displaced... the US will be giving Georgia billions in aid for this so as long as it isn't all spent on guns they should do OK.

Unfortunately those Georgians pay for the stupid moves of their leaders........troublesome but what to do?

Agree... but what can you do? The Russians today are still paying for what Stalin did... and most of his victims were his own people anyway.

Those people didnt do anything wrong, they are civilians, it was the army and the goverment that attacked south ossetia.

There are plenty of Georgians living in both South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Georgians and SO and Abkhazians intermarried. The ones that had to run away from the fighting probably had something to be guilty about. There were Georgians that fled north during this attack, running for Georgian soldiers. They were not lynched by those around them because they blamed Saakashvili for what was happening... and rightly so.

But hey, it's nice to know what "maintaining law and order" means for you as a Russian.

The peacekeeping force was attacked by Georgian forces. The Russian force that went in to help them out were not peacekeepers. They were there to protect the South Ossetians and the peacekeepers. They were not bound by any peacekeeping mandate.

And it's okay with you if civilians die as a result, through a little ethnic cleansing, or through looting, or anyhting else ?

Civilians die in wars, not matter how nice you play it. Look at Afghanistan and Iraq. The fact is that Russia didn't choose this war Saakashvili did. Russia only responded.

The title of the thread is a lie. Russian troops are not barring Georgians from returning to their homes. They are merely warning them of the consequences if they do.

If I was to tell Madeline Allbright not to go clubbing in Belgrade I am not blocking her, I am just making it clear that I think it would be unsafe for her to do so.
