Italy to pay $5 billion compensation to Libya
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
BENGHAZI, Libya - Italy agreed Saturday to pay Libya $5 billion as compensation for its 30-year occupation of the country, which ended in 1943.
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi signed a memorandum pledging the compensation package involving construction projects, student grants and pensions for Libyan soldiers who served with the Italians during the Second World War.
"It is a material and emotional recognition of the mistakes that our country has done to yours during the colonial era," Berlusconi told reporters at Benghazi airport on his arrival. "This agreement opens the path to further co-operation."
In return, Italy wants Libya to crack down on illegal migrants turning up on Italian shores, and Italy will fund $500 million worth of electronic monitoring devices on the Libyan coastline.

Every thing that is not a mud hut or hole in the sand was built by Italians and now we must pay 5 billions euros? Divide that by italy population and I must pay 100 euro, or more if we take only taxpayers.
Luckily for them, some constructions companies controlled by Berlusconi friends (in Italy or abroad) well get this money.

Bravo Italy, acknowledging your past mistakes and settling them. I wish our British government would do the same but i doubt they will be able to afford it.

1911 - conquest of Lybya
1922 - Fascist regime beginning
(that don't change nothing for the pov of some lybians who may have suffered).
BTW, I wonder how much must repay other colonial powers if Italy was so a bloodthirsty and devastanting "master".

Most of the crimes were committed in the 30's
mmmmmmm so you are telling me that Fascist regime was a peace loving one and that all what he did is build roads and schools:)
More power to you brother :)
NB: You were right about the rest of colonial powers, just wonder how much they should pay, specially France. On the other hand, they might just say that they were just spreading "Civilization" :)

No, no peace loving bunch the fascist... But the average Italian, in that time, was a different stock than other Europeans colonialist.

I mean no disrespect but you sound just like the Germans after WW2, they were all blaming Hitler and his buddies, but guess what? Germany still had to pay billions in compensation. The ironic part is that in the case of Germany, most victims were Europeans, so germany had to pay righ? In the case of France, Italy and GB the victims are either Africans or Asians, so who cares right? An earlier post even said That " it sets a dangerous precedent."

There is no limit to "mistakes" in European history, if you open up this Sareptas jar, half of the world will spend the rest of the century paying each other.
That being said, can we buy the Shetland islands back for 210 kg of gold?

I agree with you, crimes were committed or as you said Mistakes were made.
The problem is Western Hypocrisy and a good example of that would be France who adopted a law recognizing the slaughter of more than a million Armenians as genocide. On the other hand, refused to apologize to Algeria for killing one million and half algerians.

That Hypocrisy isn't limited to 'western' countries.
Also on topic, this is far from a straight payout that the thread title would have you believe.

That 4 min video is worth 5 billion? I wonder what 500 hundred years of Ottoman occupation and oppresion in south-eastern Europe is worth then. BTW this deal is mafia deal nothing to be proud of being a Libyan. I wonder if Somalia is the next one to get compensated, or should we go back to Roman Empire also?

First I am not a libyan, Second, iam not talking about compensation, Because there is no amount of money that will bring my GrandFather and my dad's grandfather to life ( they were tortured, killed and thrown in a dump by the French).
I do know that The Ottemans did bad things, but so did the the Crusaders, and the spanish during the requonquista...etc. My point is that iam just tired of western Europe lecturing us about how perfect they were and how evil we've been.

Yup. And while they're at it they might as well just cut their d1ck$ off. p-)
Truly stupid on their part to pay them the 5 billion. It would be the same as descendants of slaves in this country getting reperations. Go get a freakin' job and do something beneficial. Everyone is a descendant of someone who at some point in history had the proverbial bootjack thrust to their neck.

The damned swedes habitually invaded us, once upon a time. They even used the cathedral here as a stable for their horses, and burned our entire city to the ground. Naturally, we're outraged, and hereby demand all the proceeds from the 'Mamma Mia' musical - and movie, in compensation!

"Local" mafiosos in northern Italy? That's new to me.
Mafioso are everywhere. There was a report on how southern clans ( mafia, 'ndrangheta and camorra) grew amongst southern immigrant.
But there are also "local brands".
Veneto, the industrialized and rich region (now, decades ago was dirt poor) on the North East, the city that host Venice, has the "Mafia of the Brenta River", all made of locals. Boss was (is) Felice "Angel Face" Maniero... funny to hear a ruthless killer speaking the gentle and funny Veneto dialect (norhtern dialects usally are gentler and less... "threating" or bad-sounding like southern one).
In my city routinely construction machines and bar/pub/disco/restaurant go "ablaze"... typical extortion and revenge techniques of mafiosos... once we jumped from our chaiers because someone threw in a backyard near the home we were a "card-bomb"... (that is a big big firework... like a bucket of black bowder just to visualize)
This is rather generous of Italy.

Funny thing no Ethiopia or Eritrea mentioned.
I do know that The Ottemans did bad things, but so did the the Crusaders, and the spanish during the requonquista...etc.
You do not know about Ottomans, but you do know on Crusaders, Spaniards... ? Well few Serbs and Greeks could tell you few things about this!

Maybe it shuold. Development of the west has lots to do with exploiting rest of the world, for a long time. Is it responsibility of west to help exploited nations to advance? For example Serbia... we should get money from Austria, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, USA and rest of NATO... just for last century!
