Soldiers Inspect Work on Clinic in Ali Jassim Area

AR RAMADI, Iraq -- Soldiers from 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, assigned in support of 1st Marine Division, visited the Ali Jassim tribal area clinic to inspect improvement work there.

Officials said the clinic appeared to be in good condition and the staff reported that Coalition forces restocked them with donated medical supplies every two months.

Civil affairs teams also inspected progress on renovations to a soccer stadium in Ar Ramadi. They found work was already in progress and estimated the project could be completed by Aug. 23, one month early if the current schedule holds.

Marines Jump Start Iraqi Police Literacy Program

AL ANBAR PROVINCE, Iraq - Civil affairs representatives with the 1st Marine Division signed a contract to purchase textbooks for 500 students to initiate a new literacy program for Iraqi police.

The Iraqi Police Literacy Program will be conducted in two phases, with the first phase including 500 students. The program will eventually include up to 2,000 students.

The training program will ensure Iraqi police in the Al Anbar Province can read to at least at a 6th grade level.

Al Faw Power Plant to be Down for 36 Hours

AL FAW, Iraq -- The Al Faw power plant will be unable to supply power to the Al Faw peninsula for the next 36 hours. At about 7:20 p.m., June 7, the power plant was shut down.

Military and civil engineers are working to restore the power. They have installed a generator.

The power-plant's voltage regulators were overloaded. Four voltage regulators are unserviceable and one is serviceable. Officials say if the power were turned back on now the serviceable voltage regulator would blow.

The volt regulators will be replaced when the spares are received. The power should be restored at about 7:30 a.m., June 9.

Car Bomb in Mosul Kills 10 Civilians, Injures Scores

MOSUL, Iraq - Ten Iraqi civilians were killed and as many as 100 wounded when a car bomb was detonated in downtown Mosul in the vicinity of the Mosul City Hall around 9:15 a.m. June 8.

There was no structural damage to the City Hall building, but there is significant damage to buildings in the immediate blast area. Nine vehicles at the scene have caught fire.

Neither Coalition forces nor Coalition bases appear to have been the target of this attack.

Witnesses said the car bomb was an orange and white taxi with three suicide bombers inside.

Mosul Police and Iraqi Civil Defense Corps Soldiers have secured the scene and Coalition forces are providing security and medical assistance. The military combat support hospital in Mosul is also providing mass casualty support.

Car Bomb in Mosul Targeted Government Officials

MOSUL, Iraq - A car bomb was detonated in downtown Mosul several hundred meters from the City Hall around 9:15 a.m. June 8.

Initial reports indicated 10 Iraqi civilians were killed, and as many as 100 Iraqi civilians were injured. These numbers were initial assessments and the Ninevah Provincial Government's Chief of Staff now reports that nine people were killed and 25 Iraqi civilians were injured.

The target of the car bomb attack was a convoy that included two members of the Ninevah Provincial Council and the Deputy Chief of Police of Mosul. The council members were not wounded. The deputy chief was wounded, but not seriously.

Mosul Police and Iraqi Civil Defense Corps Soldiers have secured the scene. Mosul hospitals are handling all of the injuries. Coalition forces are providing security and medical assistance.

Witnesses said the car bomb was an orange and white taxi with three suicide bombers inside. Nine vehicles at the scene caught fire.

Reports of a second car bomb outside of a military compound in north Mosul are inaccurate. Several mortar rounds impacted a military base camp in north Mosul at 10:15 a.m., and two contract employees were injured. They have been transported to military medical facilities for care.

Diyala Province Gets New Ambulances

TIKRIT, Iraq - Members of the Iraqi Ministry of Health participated in a dedication ceremony of five new ambulances for the Diyala Province June 6.

The Public Health Team, comprised of soldiers from the Division Surgeon's office and the 415th Civil Affairs Battalion, chose several provinces to receive the new vehicles after an assessment of medical needs throughout the area.

Soldiers Donate Computers to Baghdad Schools

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Soldiers of 4th Platoon, Troop C, 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 5th Brigade Combat Team, donated 22 desktop computers to the Al Furat Neighborhood Advisory Council for area schools June 5.

The computers are part of a project to enhance the schools of Baghdad's Al Furat neighborhood with technology and other school supplies. A total of eight schools will receive computers. Six of the schools are in Al Furat and two others are in Al Schweb, a nearby neighborhood.

"This is a good opportunity for Al Furat, especially for the kids," said 2nd Lt. Tim Harris, the platoon leader. "They can do a lot with the computers ... learning with educational computer programs. It will give them something to do, so they aren't always on the streets."
