DSU

OLD: http://www.fedpol.be/old_site/rw/revue/143/images/sie12.gif

NEW: http://users.pandora.be/xbbt/Newstyle.gif

History:

"Groep Diane" no men could have know that these words would come so famous with the people in Belgium and infamous in the crime organizations in Belgium...the origin of the name Diane is from the Goddess of the hunt "Diana" You can see Diana is honoured on the shoulder patch of the unit.

Le Group Diane was raised after the decision of the Belgian goverment to make a special unit that can handle special apprehensions and tasks that request special intervention techniques...the goverment made that decision after the massacre on the olympics in München in 1972. So the unit was made a part of the gendarmerie and started to operate!

Later in 1974 the unit was renamed into SIE what stands for Special Intervention Squadron or ESI in french what stands for Escadron Special d'Intervention...ofcourse the people did not forgot the name "Groep Diane"

In 1976 an observation unit joined the SIE/ESI. .the observation unit was official made a part of the sie/esi in 1980.

In 1985 by the overload of tasks special sub-platoons where raised with the name of POSA (Protection Observation Support and Arrestation) They where stationned in the 5 biggest city's in Belgium; Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp, Charleroi and Liége. Every unit is responsible for there area.

In 1992 the DVI (Disaster Victim Identification Unit) was formed. This is a unit that is responsible for victim identifications like a bom explosion where the victims are unrecognizable. Also in 1992 the POSA Platoon of Brussels where made a part of the intervention of the SIE/ESI. In 1993 the undercover unit was made an active part of the SIE/ESI.

In 2001 the SIE has got a new name DSU what stand for Direction Special Units. This name change took place because the police reform the Gendarmerie has become the integrated police on 2 levels, Local and Federal police. The DSU belongs to the Federal police.

Yeah I saw the old one when I was a kid, it was a converted Army Jeep Bombardier - Iltis, pretty cool. They had 2 Porches of the highway police escorting it, that was a nice sight :)

I don't know where you are from, but it was in Hasselt on the Grote Ring, of the exit near the st-truider-steenweg. Now that I think of it, it was pretty wierd, why would they move that vehicle and no support personnel with it? And they were in a hurry, sirens and everything.
