Hey guys I just joined this board I'm facinated with the amount of images this site has- I commend the founder on this!

Anyway, I want to join a "Conventional"(NOT 75TH) Army Infantry Unit but can't decide which unit I want to get into-- Although the goarmy.com recruiters told me I can't decide which unit, I could certainly decide which LOCATION I want to be stationed at i.e. FT Campbell, KY - 101st etc.

For now I've decided primarily on 101st and secondary 82nd. But what are the main differences between these 4 infantry units(are there others?)

101st - Helicopter
82nd - Parachute
3rd - APCs
10th - Mountain??? What??

So what are the differences? Any mission examples of these units would help too-- Are they the only infantry units? I should read about the history of those units--

By the way, all the above units except the 3rd ID got thier M16s replaced with M4s!

Thanks,
Digital Ghost

101st Air Assault - Ride Helicopters
82nd Airborne - Parachute, or ride helicopters (more likely?)
3rd ID - This is a heavy division. You get to ride a Bradley IFV.
10th Mountain - Light Infantry - walk, or helicopter, or a truck maybe.

I think training is the same for the most part. The major differences are in how the units move on the battlefield. Hopefully one of the Army bubbas that frequents this sight can provide more details.

That is the extent of my knowledge. I was USMC infantry, and depending on what week it was, we would act as light/airmobile/mech, etc.

digital ghost STop talkin, u juss embarassing yourself.

The 101st is an Airborne division, they can jump out of planes just like they did in the olden days same wit the 82nd.

The 3rd ID is a mechanized division, like the 4th ID. 10th Mountain is a light infantry unit like the Canadian 3PPLI.

Go read there homepage tells u bout everything.

@ ESCOBAR: the 101st is now technically and Air Assault Div. which means they ride helos into combat- not parachutes. Yes, many of the men in the 101st may be ABN qualified, but the Div. as a whole isn't anymore like it was in WWII. The 82nd is the only Airborne Div. in the Army still.

@ Digital Ghost: James is right. AFAIK, only the method by which they reach the battlefield is different. Granted you are going to have more armor in the 3rd or 4th ID compared to the 101st and 82nd, however in all the units the infantry componet does pretty much the same thing.

of course, thats if you're set on Army. Like James mentioned, USMC Infantry does it all pretty much depending on what's needed that day. You can ride in a humvee/ duece and a half as light inf, in a AAV as mech. infantry or in a SeaKnight/ CH-53 for helo operations.

Wait, you sound like 82nd jumps with a parachute everywhere it goes or moves, and the mechs are stuck to their bradleys, and 101st can only move on helicopters, yet only the MARINES figured out that sometimes when you move small distances you can use dueces and humvees, or ride a helicopter... Not trying to offend of disgrace anybody, but it is just fascinating to me how some of you people believe all of the propaganda and glorification without really understanding what you are listening to.
P.S. Believe it or not, even mechanized infantry (dismounts) use helicopters for insertions.

Dmitri,

As I said...

"Hopefully one of the Army bubbas that frequents this sight can provide more details.

I didn't mean only... I meant in general. Of course they all have the flexibility to move the way they need to. The USMC is organized differently than the Army. The heaviest transport a Marine infantry battalion has are trucks and Humvees, and there are only enough to carry maybe a company of grunts at a time.

It was a great treat when we weren't foot mobile.

I didn't mean only... I meant in general. I understand, I'm sure you know that, I was addressing some other members, and not only on this thread... And like I said, no offence to them, I was just expressing my amazement about some common sense stuff. :|

I feel for you ;)

The 101st lost their airborne wings the day before it went to Vietnam. DEC 7th 1967.
