Report: Israel develops its first cruise missile

By The Associated Press

Israel has developed its first surface-to-surface cruise missile with a range of at least 300 kilometers, according to a report to be published in Jane's Defence Weekly next Wednesday.

Called the Delilah-GL (ground launch), the missile could reach into the territory of all of Israel's neighbors. It answers Israel's 10-year quest for such a missile, experts told the London-based publication.

The Delilah-GL is an adaptation of the Delilah, its air-launched predecessor, Jane's said, quoting officials at Israel Military Industries, where the missile is made.

The missile, powered by a turbojet engine, has a range of 250 kilometers, IMI said, but defense officials told Jane's that the missile could reach "well beyond 300 kilometers."

The advanced missile includes a high explosive 30-kilogram warhead and is guided by a global positioning system. The missile can also hover over an area before confirming its target through real-time visual intelligence transmitted back to the operator, Jane's reported.

The missile can be fitted with various payloads. One is an infrared device with electro-optical seekers for target acquisition and guidance. It can identify a target from a range of 16 kilometers, Jane's said.

Israel developed the new technology after a decade of trying to obtain surface-to-surface cruise missiles. The United States has twice denied Israeli requests to purchase the Tomahawk land-attack cruise missile, Jane's reported.

In the 1980s, Israel deployed its own long-range surface-to-surface missile, called Jericho II. Foreign reports say it has a range of at least 1,500 kilometers, can carry a payload of 1,000 kilograms and is suitable for nuclear weapons.

I wonder if they can use this platform for extreme long range missile... like the Phoenix...for AA that is...

Israel's 1st surface-to-surface cruise missile
Weapon created after U.S. refused to sell Jewish state Tomahawk

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Aaron Klein

Israel has developed its own surface-to-surface cruise missile after Washington twice refused to sell the Jewish state its Tomahawk land-attack weapon, an Israel source told WND.

The source was confirming a report to appear in the military journal Jane's Defense Weekly next week that Israel modified its Delilah air-to-surface missile to reach targets 200 miles away when launched from the ground.

The journal describes the revised Delilah missile as being highly sophisticated and attributes an additional boost engine as crucial in making the adaptation possible.

The missile, which Israel hopes will prove a deterrent to missiles being developed by Iran, can hover over a target area before attacking with a choice of several warheads, and uses a variety of infrared and electro-optic systems to pinpoint enemies up to 16 kilometers away. It can also be used as an unmanned reconnaissance vehicle.

Originally developed as an aerial decoy, the Delilah evolved into a strike weapon used since the early '90s by Israel's F-16 and upgraded F-4E attack aircrafts.

The journal notes in addition to converting the Delilah, Israel is also exploring the possibility of converting its anti-ship naval launch missiles into land-attack missiles, each with a range of up to 300 kilometers. It also quotes unconfirmed reports suggesting Israel Aircraft Industries is developing a longer-range cruise missile that can be deployed by Israel's submarines.

Israel is well-known for its advanced weapons industry. Security sources told WND after Washington sold Israel its first batch of F-16s, Israeli companies surprised their American counterparts by returning a model with a series of impressive proprietary upgrades, including more advanced infrared capabilities.

In addition, Israel's El Al Airlines recently became the first commercial airline company to install an anti-missile system on its aircrafts. The system, called Flight Guard, developed by Israel Aircraft Industries, responds automatically to an approaching heat-seeking missile by firing flares that divert the missile away from the airplane.

Flight Guard has been used by Israeli military aircraft for a decade, and several U.S. airlines have expressed interest in purchasing the system.

@AirZone

That CM is a sub sonic missile, it use a turbojet. For something like the Phoenix Israel needs either a strong solid fuel booster or a ramjet, as for now the ramjet is still very new and hard to develop. It would then need a very good INS/ autopilot / processing system, an active radar seeker and a good data-link and here the data-link technology of the Delilah could help but there is also already the Popeye data link.

Sup P ? I knew you will be interested... What about popeye or popeye light (for lighter aircrafts like F16?) the range is about 150KM.. more than enough (and im sure with future developments they can get better range)

now about all the system+technology Israel already have it...
only problem is about the Radars because I know Alta radar is really strong one and way better than our current ones but its really expensive and im not sure Israel would invest so much money just to have better radar for special (and expensive missile) mabye Derby is more than enough this days against our current enemys and if we would have to get longer range im sure we can use the popeye with AA version... (popeye for F15I and popeye light for F16I ? ;))

but in the end IDF is not a rich army and they need cost-effective stuff so i bet when there will be need (i hope there will never be any need) our great minds will able to build a special exterme long range AA missile using our current (and very successful) technology and knowledge.

A Delilah-GL surface-to-surface missile being test fired. Israel's main arms manufacturer, IMI - Advanced Systems Division (ASD), has announced the creation of the country's first surface-to-surface cruise missile

The Delilah 1 has been around for a while ..
http://www.israeli-weapons.com/weapons/missile_systems/air_missiles/delilah/delilah.jpg

In 1995, Flight International reported that China was providing funding to Israel for development of an air-launched cruise missile based on the Israeli Delilah anti-radiation attack drone. The report noted that China also would be a customer for the new cruise missile. The basic Delilah is a 230-mile range drone which has benefited from U.S. technology in airframe design and in its small U.S.-designed Williams J400-WR-401 engine. This missile has an accuracy of 300 feet.

The new missile (Delilah 2) reportedly will be larger than the Delilah but will retain its basic configuration. It is not clear whether the larger size will allow for both a longer range and a larger payload, or just the latter. This might be provided in the recently revealed Bet Shemesh Sorek 4, which produces 800 pounds of thrust. If and when acquired, this new version of the Delilah would give the PLA a much more useful and accurate cruise missile. It also would provide advanced cruise missile technology in the areas of design, engines, fuel, and guidance. All part of the great Zionist takeover plan to fill each country with Israelis.

This missile system should keep the neighbouring 'cousins' 'quiet' for a while.

There are different plates - for Israelis and for non-Israelis (i.e. Palestinians, U.N vehicles etc...)

Of course Arab Israelis have the same plates as other Israelis so he was wrong...

The only "difference" in plates was between regular cars and "government" cars which had "special" number sequences so those who need to know will know ;) but this was canceled a few month ago, I guess because everyone knew how to spot them at the end.
