"He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself." - Thomas Paine.
true - false - insane - realistic - your views? - Beowulf smells funky?

Well, Beowulf does smell funky, so I hear. But he's off trying to eat snakes, so that makes sense, I guess.
It's pretty valid, but I haven't had a huge amount of time to think it over. I guess quote Voltaire and say something to the effect of, "I may not always agree with what you say, but I'll gladly die for your right to say it." Of course, that's more like political opponents than enemies.
I don't know if Paine's ideal is always practical. Oh come on guys, stoli's trying, I'm trying, any one else? There's got to be something better than what I just wrote. Have a good one, and just some thoughts...

Paine was a firebrand so he wasn't always striving for practicality. More like going for the dramatic....Like a generalized metaphor. Firing for effect...

Thats the only thing I understood in this whole thread
Generally speaking I avoid philosophy like the clap since it just confuses me, however since I assume this is an attempt to alleviate the board from the usual mastabatory/scatological based conversation I'll try.
Plain and simple, the world doesn't work that way. Protecting an enemy is all well and good but not practical in any sense of the word. I think the idea that "My enemies enemy is my friend" is more likely to appear throughout history than "My enemies enemy is my enemy".

Essentially the quote means to obtain truly peace/liberty there can be no fighting or discord in the world. It's a nutcase philosophy. But truth be told it looks to be more geared towards the internal workings of a country. In that light, if you want true liberty for your country, you have to protect everyone's liberty regardless if you like them or not.

Hey now boys... don't be making fun of his stench when he's not here to defend himself. That's not nice. (He is kind of smelly though.)

For a science experiment I did in grade 8 we had to light Cheetos on fire, I ended up setting the whole lab table on fire.
Man that was cool.
