Layton: I'll scrap U.S. softwood lumber deal
By THE CANADIAN PRESS

KENORA, Ont. - NDP Leader Jack Layton is promising to withdraw from the Canada-U.S. softwood lumber agreement and renegotiate the deal if he forms the next government.

Layton made the announcement while visiting a northern Ontario community hard hit by layoffs in the forestry industry. He says he'll renegotiate a softwood deal within six months under the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Layton says he'll also restrict raw log imports, overhaul the program to fight the pine beetle infestation and develop sustainable forestry practices.

Next stop: NFLD, where he'll announce that the NDP will conjour historic levels of cod stocks out of thin air.
There's nothing like pandering to an audience......

That's just sad. It's almost like fearmongering it seems.

Without knowing anything about you, Jack 67, let me just say that I'd already vote for you over Layton.

Too bad this would be a great running campaign for anyone else but Jack Layton...

Especially out west as everyone in the smaller towns knows or has been effected by the pillaging of our forest industry mill jobs to "down south". Still very common to see large signs on house's and on telephone poles and along highways (Malahat anyone?) that say "BAN RAW LOG EXPORTS".

Raw log exports have been a thorn in my side for years.
I used to do work at different mills all over the place, and right next door at the port they'd spend a week loading raw logs onto freighters.
Heart-breaking.
