Okay bit off-topic, but in spirit of thread.

Finnish military designations for weapons and other equiment:

Small arms and artillery: Is in format caliber, type, year of adoption in service.
Examples:

7.62rk62, 7.62mm assault rifle model 62, adopted on 1962. Rk stands for RynnäkköKivääri = assault rifle.
7.62rk95TP, 7.62mm assault rifle model 95, adopted on 1995. TP= Taitto perä = folding stock.
7.62kvkk62, 7.62mm light machine gun model 62, adopted on 1962. Kvkk = KeVytKoneKivääri.
7.62Tkiv85, 7.62mm sniper/marksmans rifle model 85, adopted on 1985. Tkiv= TarkkuusKivääri. Literally Accurized rifle.
8.6Tkiv2000, 8.6mm(.338LapuaMag) sniper/marksmans rifle model 2000, adopted on 2000.
9.00pist80, 9mmP pistol model 80, adopted on 1980. Pist = Pistooli, you can probably figure out translation.
12.7itkk96, 12.7mm anti-aircraft machine gun model 96, adopted on 1996. Itkk = IlmaTorjuntaKoneKivääri.
12.7Tkiv2000, 12.7mm sniper/marksmans rifle model 2000. Local designation of Barrett M82A1.
And there is some exceptions this too in small arms like:
7.62kkPKM, 7.62 machine gun PKM. I'm not sure when adopted in service here.
7.62TkivSVD, 7.62 mm sniper/marksmans rifle SVD/Dragunov. Not sure when it entered service.

23ItK61, 23mm anti-aircraft cannon model 61. Adopted on 1961. ItK= IlmaTorjuntaKanuuna =anti-aircraft cannon.
23ItK95, modenized version of above. 1995. Some times referred as 23ItK61-95.
155K83, 155mm cannon model 83, as much of surprise adopted on service 1983. K = Kanuuna = Cannon. Actually this is said to be cannon howitzer, not sure what that means, as local military proverb goes: Better be an idiot than artillery man.
122H63A, 122mm howitzer model 63, adopted in 1963. H = haupitsi. Not sure about what A stands for.
152TELAK91, 152mm self propelled cannon model 91, adopted in 1991. TELAK = TELaKanuuna = literally, tracked cannon.

Missiles are designated bit differently: Type of missile, year adoption to service.
Examples:

PstOhj 2000, anti-tank missile model 2000. You can guess when it entered to sevice. PstOhj = PanSsarinTorjunta OHJus. Local designation of Spike system.
PstOhj 82, anti-tank missile model 1982, entered service on 1983, reason of this is that two missiles of same type were purchased on same time and they needed different designations. NATO designation AT-4, being retired from inventory currently.
PstOhj 83, anti-tank missile model 1983, entered service on 1983. iTOW/TOW2. Missile types of system have different designations: PstOhj 83 (original iTOW, retired), PstOhj 83M (TOW2), PstOhj 83MA (TOW2A) and PstOhj 83MB (TOW2B)

ItO 90, Anti-aircraft missile 90. ItO = IlmaTorjuntaOhjus= SAM. Local designation of Grotale NG.
ItO 96, Anti-aircraft missile 96. Local designation of BUK-M1.
ItO 2005, local designation of ASRAD-R.

To much irritarion some times lot of military designations of material are contradicting in different official sources, good examples are sniper rifles, designation can be either K=rifle or Tkiv=sniper rifle. The designations can change even in same manual/document.

In addition to that unforms/helmets/etc. are designated by year of adoption. So there is tons of equpment designated m62 and ,m91 and m05 uniforms etc. As our military has habit of changing and accepting tons of stuff at same time every few years, like uniforms and other field gear. So there is for example T-shirt m91, jacket m91...

I must stop before I mention all gear designations. :D
