That of course was the date and time of the opening guns of the Yom Kippur War of which the 35th anniversary is about to arrive. I was living in Berkely California at that time so it was 4:05 AM Pacific time. I must have sturred in my sleep because that war would have a special meaning to me for a long time(I'm not jewish).
I remember about 10AM I walked through Strawberry Creek on UC Berkely campus and when I reached the main campus something different was happening that hadn't happened before. There were big crowds of people listening to speakers and there were arabs and jews arguing. I asked a guy that was walking by what happened and he said Egypt and Syria invaded Israel last night. Then I walked over to the crowd that was biggest to hear the speaker and later I would find out(and befriend) a guy named Lenny Glaser(not his real name but the name he gave and thats why I will use it publicly).
The interesting thing about Lenny was that he carried the proof of what he was saying in a portfolio with him and when someone questioned him about what he was saying he would pull out the documented proof. Anyway, Lenny had been an insider in the leftist political movement and he personally knew the leaders of the anti-war movement such as Jerry Rubin, Abbie Hoffman, etc.(actually Lenny had been one of the leaders and served jail time for his political activites) So Lenny and I would have many talks but it was the Yom Kippur War that was the center of things at that time.
One interesting event that I remember was one night there was a leftist political meeting in the second story of a building on Telegraph Avenue(I'm not on the political left). There were various speakers including Lenny and after all the speakers were done the whole crowd chanted in unison "Palestine is one", "Palestine is one", etc. That really suprised me because many of the leaders of the left were jews.
I originally thought that Lenny was anti Israel but later would find out that he really wasn't. many months later Lenny would recommend that I read the Jeruselm Post because it was running a chapter by chapter series of the book 'The Road to Ramadan'.
My time is running out on this library computer so I will continue another time.
