Need help picking a new rifle, I alread ordered 700 rounds of 7.62 x 39. I was looking into buying a VZ58 but with elections coming up and Obama stating he wanted to ban AK47's, I'm wondering if I should just get a cheapo AK instead? I really like the idea of drum mags but the VZ58 just screams quality.

How hard is it to put together an AK47? Would I be better off just buying it already assembled? Why should I not get a VZ58?

Nice rifle and would cover the budget.

Not hard for a good shopman, but can be a task for ametures as I myself found out the hard way tryin to build a ak74. This rifle above is good for your $. Like Bravo said, grab some AR recievers, you can get them at 125$ or so a piece. then youll eventually have 3 rifles. Bravo has it right.
Oh and the VZ's, they are an option for you if you like them, they arent bad rifles. Just giving you my 2 Cents. I think the WASR is a better rifle.

500 is a rip off, after paying shipping (20 bucks) and gun transfer at my shop (47 dollars) I'd have spent 567 bucks. I can get a WASR for 350 bucks on classicarms or at my gun shop for 400ish.

You can get 2 WASR 10s and still have some left over. Fit and finish is lacking but they work and I love mine.

I havent seen a wasr for 350 in a while, But your shop sounds like the place to be. Centerfiresystems.com has some nice ak series rifles for cheap.

Seems to be the the popular thing, Ar recievers are flying like hotcakes. Not to change the subject, Is it me or is .223 coming down in price again?

You can pretty well have your pick of AK's for under $700. Grab one of those and an AR lower (less than $200), and you should be set.....just make sure you stock up on full capacity magazines as well.

Don't rule out the FAL. It's a great rifle, but may run you about a $100 more. Take a look at Gunbroker.

Anyone here have any experience with a Polish Tantal? I'm thinking about picking one up. Good, Bad?

I have heard that Tantal's are very nice shooters. Never handled one myself though...

Yes they are very nice shooters. and the 5.45 ammo is cheap. I would get one of the 5.45 ak's before any other. Like the Bulgarian aks ak74. Very nice rifles. I really like the side folder.

Hollis helped my dad build a Tantal, and it is a nice shooting rifle.
I'd get a Yugoslav AK, or if you can afford it, a Krebs AK.
If you have enough $$$ left over, get an AR lower receiver, and as many parts/components as your budget allows.

i may pick up an AR reciever, but due to college finacial reasons i may not buy another gun till i turn 21.

Well, you should have bought the gun before the ammo. I guess you're pretty decided on what to buy-so what's it for? Hunting? Precision shooting? Recreational shooting? Your end use would dictate my suggestion.

AK 47 is probably the easiest rifle to assemble...thats why it is popular...chearp,efficient,simple
