Does anyone have any photos of the SA80 with the new RIS handguard? Can't find many photos of them on google images although I did come across this one
That was one of the old versions made by B&T of the handguard. There has been two threads recently which have covered the new kit including the rifle additions...
best pic from those is probably this one-

Great photo. Thanks a lot. The uniform the soldier in the foreground is wearing seems to be slightly different as is his helmet, which looks like an American PASGT type. Is that the new uniform and helmet due to be issued or was that just for the photo?

Makes the weapon look ugly as hell.
Looks like it will let sand in more than the old hand guard. Also there is a gap in the top and a huge 1 in the front it doesnt exactly fill me with confidence. Looks Ugly and Sloppy made.

Hows the new ACOG compare to the SUSAT (which is a bloody great bit of kit in my view)? And are the sights/handguards just being changed for those on ops, or can we expect all this new gucci kit to hit an armoury near you at some stage?
I agree the new handguard looks weird - the green ones at least try to blend in colour-wise - but if the new one has got the bipod-foregrip thingy and lots of gadgets can be bolted to it, then I can see how it's definitely got its uses. What do the lads using them on ops make of it?

Sights and Handguards are being issued to troops in thearter first and being kept in thearter. So no Idea when the armourys will start getting some.
I've used the Eotech, Acog and the good old Susat. The Susat was a good piece of kit when it was new but compared to either the Eotech and the Acog I'm afraid the new sights are far better in my own opinion. I liked how clear and sharp the picture was through the Acog and I liked how good the Eotech was for CQB. the Susat just doesn't rank up there with them anymore. Don't get me wrong the SUSAT is still a good bit of Kit but it's coming to the end of it's life now I think.

Fair one, I haven't used anything other than SUSAT, except for a course when it was all iron sights, which were I thought were also pretty good.
Sounds like the ACOG and the EO are the way forwards then?
I'm guessing if they keep the handguards in theatre then there should be less of a drama with the lads painting them up, adding their own kit to the rails and everything, which is good.

I didnt necessarily mean with the ris. I mean the rifle as a whole, never seen it concealed.

Thats the desert camo sniper tape thats floating about out on ops. You can get camo spray paint for your rifles as well now.

You've always been able to get dpm paint. It's only just come out as a spray.

It's better when there's a little more leniency from up above like. Instead of the just gettin them biting at your balls for the smallest thing.

Is that a MG-42 ?
Britboy
10-07-2008, 12:42 PM
I'm guessing its more likely to be an MG3 (similar but in 7.62x51mm NATO) - of the Royal Danish Army?
Danish probably, MG3 no...
Their M/62 is closer to the MG42 or MG1 than the MG3

I've went from a Gimpy gunner to a UGL hmmm I wonder what's easier to patrol with.
I love the gpmg, best weapon in the infantry by far! but I'll take a sa80 with UGL any f**kin day it's not heavy if you've got a bit of muscle about you. Try tabin with a GPMG, ammo, food and water with Osprey. Or a rifle and the tripod plus a s**t load of link or even the barrel bag then talk to me about heavy.

I concur. Being in the Sustained Fire platoon means you get the best weapon, but its a bitch to carry and to clean too!
Always thought it might be a good idea to 'poach' a third guy for the gunteam, share out some of the load of kit and ammo...

the F-88S/203 [aug] is a bitch to patrol with, but nothing compares to humping the GPMG, as you said, a little bit of upper body strengh and your right.

I never really liked the SA80 (or L85, or whatever designation our Brit comrades are using), but I must admit an RIS makes for a versatile and generally cool addition.

Looks like a good piece of kit, The grip appears a bit chippy, but i'm sure guys will upgrade it.
My mob won't be seeing it anytime soon though, we've all got the carbine.
Which I really don't like.

Easy? Firing from a moving platform, taking into account downwash, airflow and aircraft speed. Then add on top of that what kind of target you're engaging and what it's doing. Easy it ain't, Miniguns are easy. Spray and pray, the RAF way. We army DoorGunners prefer aimed shots!
