Indian Maoist group: We killed Hindu leader

NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- A Maoist group has claimed responsibility for the killing of a Hindu leader, whose death sparked a wave of Hindu-Christian riots in southern India.

Indian nuns protest against the recent violence which has seen Christians attacked.

Sabyasachi Panda, the head of the Communist Party of India-Maoist, told reporters of two private television stations that his group was behind the Hindu leader's death, the country's national news agency said Sunday.

The leader, Laxmananda Saraswati, preached the tenets of Hinduism to the tribal people of the state. And Panda said Maoists had earlier warned him to desist from "such works" or face consequences, PTI said.

Panda said the Maoists killed Saraswati because he was "spreading social unrest" in the tribal area, the news agency said.

The Indian government has consistently claimed the shooting death may have been the work of Maoist rebels.

But hardline Hindu groups blamed the state's Christian minority for Saraswati's death.

He and four others were killed in August when 20 to 30 gunmen barged into a Hindu school and began shooting.

Afterward, police arrested five Christians as suspects in the case.

The hardliners held up the arrests as proof of Christian complicity. They took to the streets in anger, rampaging through predominantly Christian neighborhoods, ransacking shops and torching houses.

A Christian orphanage was set on fire. A 20-year-old woman, who was teaching children inside, burned to death.

Christian resident fought back, and the clashes spread.

The communal violence left churches and temples razed to the ground. More than 20 people died, and hundreds were arrested.

Even after the Maoists' claim of responsibility, some fundamentalist Hindu groups blamed Christians for the death.

The hardline Vishwa Hindu Parishad, or World Hindu Council rejected the claim saying the communist group -- known as 'Naxals' -- did not have a religious agenda.

"Have the Maoists started fighting in the name of God now?" VHP leader Subansh Chauhan was quoted as saying by CNN-IBN, CNN's sister network.

The rebels, who claim to be fighting for the poor and the dispossessed, have been battling the government in an insurgency that has resulted in thousands of casualties since the late 1960s.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called Naxalism India's biggest security threat. Last year, more than 800 people were killed in Naxal-related violence across the country, according to local media reports.

'Advani, Singhal, Togadia natural targets of Maoists'

BHUBANESWAR: Branding Sangh Parivar as a 'fundamentalist' grouping, Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda has said senior BJP leader L K Advani and VHP's Ashok Singal and Pravin Togadia are "natural targets" of the Left wing extremists as they are instigating communal passion.

Panda alias Sunil, who met a group of journalists at an undisclosed place in the state on Saturday, said Maoists were in search of an opportunity to eliminate the three leaders "as they are instigating communal passion in the country".

"We will kill the trio whenever a chance is available," Panda who was declared as 'most wanted by Orissa Police said.

"These leaders always come to meet the people under the protection of CRPF jawans. Therefore, we could not kill them till now," Panda, who is the secretary of the state organising committee of CPI (Maoist), said.

Admitting that the Maoists had for the first time intervened in any religious dispute by killing Laxamananda Saraswati, Panda said they wanted to create a casteless society devoid of exploitation where the people would not face discrimination of any kind.

Asked whether Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was also in the hit-list of Maoists, Panda said: "No.

"It is a fact that we are angry with Patnaik for running the government in Orissa at the instruction of BJP leaders. But he is not in our target."

The Maoist leader asked Patnaik to work for the people instead of appeasing BJP leaders.

The Maoist leader also admitted that Maoist groups in Orissa derive major support from minority communities. He also said there was pressure from both Christians and Dalits to eliminate VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati.

“We had asked Laxmanananda to desist from anti-Christian activities. He created a riot in December 2007 and subsequently targeted people indulging in cow slaughter," he said, adding people of both the communities were opposed to the seer.

Noting that most of the cadre members and supporters in Orissa belonged to Christian community, Panda said, "It is a fact that Christians are in majority in our organisation. Our supporters in Orissa's Rayagada, Gajapati and Kandhamal also belonged to Christian community."

The Maoist leader, however, pointed out that though Christians were major support base of the outfit in Orissa, the situation was not similar across the country.

"We do not believe in any religion or are attached to any religious groups. We are not in favour of any religion," he said claiming Laxamananda was working to revive Brahminism which was almost disappearing.
