Well, first off there was no peoples communist party like in China for example, it was the SED that ruled, a socialist party.

Merkel never had the choice to live in either East or West-Germany. She was in East-Germany and had to make her living there, since obviously people who tried to exit the country ""illegally"" were confronted with borders that were 1) manned by guards that were ordered to kill any human that tried to cross said border 2) self-shooting machineguns that would rip anything apart that made a movement 3) landmines, walls, barb wire and other stuff. And if you were able to get around all this you could be sure that your familiy/friends you left back home were getting a close view by the STASI.

Merkel for example was in the FDJ, which was the youth-socialist organisation. She became member of that as a child. It is critical to understand that people who did not join the FDJ were simply getting great drawbacs in attending better education/studying for example and were generally suspicious to the goverment organs. Everyone who did not obey to the socialst rule was put down, and not being allowed to study at a university was actually one of the more easier punishments. It went up from getting spied on by the STASI (Kind of like the GESTAPO, a secret police that tried to spy into every aspect of lives, their tactic was to have members who were Doctors, Teachers, etc everday people in all kind of part of society - Once you said the wrong thing while these people were present you could be sure to end up on a secret list and get data collect about your) to ending up in Jail or even getting executed.

She never was active in the SED, even more at the end of the DDR she was a member of the opposition. Saying that she was a communist or socialist is simply a slap in her face, in my opinion, and I only heared this from some (U.S.) bloggers who seem to do their research with a crystal ball and spin everything together so it fits their views.

Merkel is a very educated women who had to go through alot in her life, becoming first female chancellor was definitely no easy task. And at the end, today she is the chancellor with her party which are the Conservative Christian Democrats... Conservative, Christians and Democratic - Definitely nothing the Socialist or Communists were/are fond of.
