Jörg Haider (or Joerg Haider; born 26 January 1950, died October 11 2008 in a car accident [1]) was an Austrian politician. He was Governor of Carinthia and Chairman of the "Alliance for the Future of Austria" (Bündnis Zukunft Österreich, BZÖ).

Austrian far-right politician Joerg Haider has been killed in a road accident, police reports say.
Haider died in Carinthia, his political stronghold, early on Saturday, police in Klagenfurt said.
They said he was driving alone when his car came off the road and he suffered severe head and chest injuries.
The 58-year-old was a former leader of the Austrian Freedom Party, and was known for his anti-immigration and anti-EU policies.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7664846.stm

Austrian far-right leader Haider dies in road accident: report
29 minutes ago
VIENNA (AFP) — Austrian far-right leader Joerg Haider died in a road accident Saturday, APA news agency reported quoting the police.
"The governor of Carinthia and leader of the BZOe (Alliance for Austria's Future) Joerg Haider died after a car accident early Saturday in Klagenfurt", the capital of his home state, the agency said.
Haider, 58, was at the wheel of his official car in the south of Klagenfurt when it veered off the road for unknown reasons.
He suffered serious injuries to his head and chest and died shortly after the accident, APA added.
Haider, Austria's most notorious post-war politician, headed the Alliance for Austria's Future after turning the country's Freedom Party (FPOe) into a political force in the 1980s and 1990s and prompting EU sanctions against Austria in 2000.
Perpetually tanned, athletic and stylish, he transformed from a young firebrand to an experienced politician in the past decade, helping his young BZOe party, only founded in 2005, to its best result in general elections held last month.
Media-savvy he never stayed out of the limelight for long, offering to mediate hostage crises in North Africa with his good friend Seif al-Islam, the son of Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi, and forcibly removing bilingual street signs in Carinthia, which has a strong Slovenian minority.
Haider became involved with the youth wing of the FPOe in his early 20s.
After graduating with a law degree from Vienna University, he moved to southern Carinthia, where he soon became involved in local politics, quickly rising through the ranks of the FPOe until he took over the leadership of the party in 1986.
His run as Carinthia's governor was interrupted in 1991, however, after he made comments praising the Third Reich's employment policies. But he was re-elected in 1999 and 2004.

It seems very strange even more if you look at the politic situation in Austria right now. If it's been a crash with another car... ok! But the reports says his car got of the road. In cold war car accidents were a favorite tool of the intelligence services to get rid of somebody. I don't trust the whole thing. But my guess is that we will never know for sure (like in many other cases).

Haider made statements that seemed to imply support for some ideas of National Socialism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Socialism). His first stint as governor in 1989 ended abruptly when he praised the employment policies of Nazi Germany and was forced to resign (see [5] (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/464260.stm)) A few years later, he described World War II concentration camps as "punishment camps" and said the SS were "a part of the German army which should be honoured" (see [6] (http://www.time.com/time/europe/magazine/2000/214/haiderquotes.html)). He also compared the deportation of Jews by the Nazis to the expulsion of Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia after World War II (see [7] (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/464260.stm)). He associated publicly with Waffen-SS veterans, including attending at least one major remembrance ceremony (see [8] (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2000/oct/02/austria)). On one occasion, he insulted Ariel Muzicant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ariel_Muzicant) by saying "I do not understand how someone named Ariel [the name of a popular laundry detergent] can catch so much filth."[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B6rg_Haider#cite_note-7) Haider's critics claimed the remark was anti-Semitic.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B6rg_Haider#cite_note-8)

He may have had his faults, and I certainly don`t agree with all the statements he made, however I believe he raised some questions about the "unified" condemation of SS-veterans in the two parts which I have quoted above.
I`m no military historian and eventhough I know SS did some horrible things maybe not all of them were involved as individuals, maybe some only participated in conventional warfare.
For the ones to which that would apply Heider at least shed light on something important that few other politicians would condemn to easily.

Lets put it down to what it was a road accident, and leave the tinfoil hats at homewoot
Looking at the fog in the background, the visibility was probably worse along the road when
the accident happened, especially as there is a river nearby the scene.

You're right, here. The VW Phaeton isn't a car you die in easily due to modern safety technics.
Maybe, Stasi technique, lurking behind a curve without light, starting engine and drive fast on counter-course with lights turned on full.

I suppose one thing that annoys me about this being an "accident", is the timing. Exactly upon his highest success, he dies suddenly in a car crash and is buried. It doesn't make sense. He's too controversial a figure, for better or worse, for such an accident to occur with nothing more to it. How can this be the end?
I was no particular fan of him at all. But it seemed there was a change in the sentiment among many Austrians, and he was the personification of it. Now that personification has died under suspicious circumstances, supposedly coincidentally. As a political player with many enemies, it would not be right not to question this sudden death.

It should be illegal to call people a "Nazi" or "racist" without some proof and/or reliable verification by a recognized institute or two. There isn’t really much worse you can call a living person in today’s politically correct world – although that reflects the hypocritical mindset of some segments of society, who consider it fair to label all and sundry who share different views a “Nazi” and/or “racist,” sometimes for merely pointing out facts about certain situations.

Back on topuic and I see some damaged temporary barriers, is it possible there was some street repairs or diversions which could have contributed (caused?) this accident??
He was a pretty radical dude, but I can understand why he was popular. Political correctness and a paralysis of opinion, an unwillingness to put your own people first couldcreate this. Throw in some hardship and someone always gets blamed/pigeonholed/scapegoated.
It would be impossible for him to exist if the mainstream politicians done their job properly, i.e. he is a result of their fail.

He remembers the crash with Dodi & Diana Spencer
que the X-Files:roll:
Yeah those two crashes have something in common, don't speed, don't drink, don't die.
Reminds me of the conspiracy nutz when Moellemann (German Politician) decided to jump out of a plane and not open his parachute. Give this thread another 3-4 pages and it was the Mossad who whacked that anti-semite.

Amen to that.

Some people here (and in other threads, too) are very fast with calling people "Nazi".
A Nazi, in my term, is somebody who completly get Darwins "Survival of the fittest" wrong by thinking killing other species (races) is a advantage for the owen species(race).
Even I don't like populists like Haider, he was not a Nazi.
So, RIP

Nah, he was just a Nazi..
Really? you've seen his partei book with number?
Throwing around "Nazi" like a comma against any you disagree with politically devalues those who lives were lost to the actions of TRUE Nazi's
REAL NAZI's

Tschüss Haidi!
Too hard to read the entire thread or just conveniently ignoring some parts ?
We all see what we want to see... Labeling someone as a nazi is the liberal media's way of dealing with tough political opponents.
The Haider remarks you quote were not controversial and had more to do with the politics of the post-war era that he grew up in than anything else.
Former Waffen-SS soldiers receive regular soldiers pensions from the German government. There's a reason for that.
Concentration camps were also used as correctional camps, convicted criminals were sent there as well. The different categories of prisoners wore different symbols. Does not imply anything else. The distinction is important since I don't think anyone would like pedophiles to receive the same compensation as holocaust survivors.
The expulsion of Germans from Eastern Europe is among the largest forms of ethnic cleansing the world has ever seen.

I think the descriptive term some of our posters are searching for is:-
NEO-NAZI.;)

You conveniently forgot to mention Nazi Extermination Camps.
And "Ethnic cleansing" has far more sinister connections to most,
than forcing ethnic German people to migrate to the west post 1945,
as you would have us belive:roll:

You're right, I "conveniently" "forgot" that. You saw right through my sinister plan, boy you're good.

I thought everyone knew the atrocities were on an equally massive scale. There's an old thread on the forum you can look up.

Would be interesting to know your definition of "Neo-Nazi".

so its obvisous that some do not like him, based on his personality, on his political views w/e... but lableling him a nazi and wishing them to rot in hell once theyve already died is a bit much... call him a radical, call him a racist, but nazi, thats extreme. keep the thread civil. itll prob get closed soon anyway.

I see that there are people posting their feelings on youtube regarding Haider. One guy was quite literate, but came off as sort of a jerk.
I think we should be respectful of the dead but also mindful of their actions and legacies. Regardless, remember that there are children mourning the passing of their Vati.
Hey Lucky Strike:
I'd be interested in your and any other AUSTRIAN observations regarding some of the obituaries on him.
for example, the write-ups in theguardian.co.uk or telegraph.co.uk

that's a serious accusation you have there...
any proof? otherwise it's defamation you know.
Can't defame a dead person in most western jurisdictions, IIRC.
