I bought one of these recently to fly home with one of my rifles for a hunting trip, and this thing is a great piece of gear IMHO: http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1720

Purchased it at Sportsman's Warehouse for $200. I was sold with the wheels on it and how solid it is. I traced my 2 hunting rifles on the middle piece of foam with a Sharpie and then cut that away using an electric filet knife; really easy. I only flew home with one heavy-barrelled bolt action .22 magnum in it and it did not exceed the airlines' 50lbs rule; I never got a chance to weigh it with both rifles. On the way to the camp, it dowpoured and everything stayed nice a dry in the back of the truck with no shifting in the case.

Pelican has a great reputation but I thought I'd post this if anybody else had thought about getting one.

Another great product they make is this (for anyone that works with NVGs): http://www.pelican.com/lights_detail.php?recordID=2130IR

my platoon had these in our sleeve pockets on night patrols

I have never tried it myself, but I was told by an instructor once that lots of places that have CNC machines and setups have the computers or electronics arrive in pelican cases. Often time they don't need them anymore once the machines are set up. If you know about a place like that, you can often just ask them for the cases.

Haven't ever done it myself but I can't see why asking would hurt. Personally I have only had good experience with pelican products.

interesting. i guess this is a cheaper way to go for just general storage and not just for firearms.

Like my Granddad always said "all they can say is no."

Thanks to the original poster for the review. When you invest so much into firearms it only makes good sense to invest a little into a quality case to transport them and Pelican appears to be the best.

Hm, these are a lot nicer than I thought. I didn't know they came with an O-ring seal and pressure equalizer knob. Thanks for the post.

I have has a smaller one, for my pistols,
http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1450 for around 15 years or so. [similar to this, but mine has a fixed handle]

It is excellent, and other than minor asthetics (outside roughed up) it is as good as the day I bought it.

I keep my laptop in one while traveling, only downside is the occasional awkward look you get. I also have one for my Ipod while camping, does what I need it to.

I work in the aviation industry and almost all the field gear/instruments/testers that cost their weight in gold comes in a Pelican case, they are indestrictable!
