D.O.A.V., Delta Operator Assault vest. I'm not really sure if that's the same vest they used in real life though.

All DELTA Operatives in the movie "Black Hawk Down" wore 2 layers of "vests" if you will:

The first "layer" is the Armor:

http://www.wargameclub.com/pcart/shopper.php?itm=PT-CG-DFBA_srch_delta&PHPSESSID=4997ea4cec245abb04bd91ef601faca0

Second layer is the vest which holds magazines:

http://www.lightfighter.com/item.html?PRID=442968

There are too many variations of the above with armor and different sorts of "second layer" vests worn over it but the above is what I recall seeing them wearing the most

yeah thats what I was thinking, the DOAV didnt sound right to me at all.

At the risk of sounding like a geek here; what they wore in the movie is very different from what Delta used at that time for real. The vests the real operators used are both armor and tactical vests, in one unit. I'm not nitpicking the movie here, just want to make sure the info is straight. :)

I know for a fact that no DOAVs were used. The DOAV was not around in '91. If you own the DVD set for BHD, watch the behind the scenes part and pause it when they show Eric Bana being "dressed" for an upcoming shot. If you look closely, you will notice that he is wearing the DELTA body armor, and the .223 chest pouch, but also some kind of modular vest so that he could attach buttpacks onto the back to hold his NVGs and other gear. If anyone could figure what vest it is, that would be great. And I already know that it is not the Modular Omega From BHI.

The deltas in the movie had alot of different vests. They arent all the same, I'll join the search with you guys.

yes, some of the ACTORS wore the following:

http://www.lightfighter.com/item.html?PRID=442968 - Blackhawk Chest Pouch Rig

and

http://www.lightfighter.com/item.html?PRID=518893 - as worn by the character Hoot - The BlackHawk Urban Assault Vest

Rangerone, first off this is a movie, you cannot compare it to the real thing. Just because it was based on a real event, doesnt mean the movie is gunna feature the same exact gear, weapons, characters, settings, etc as the real event. and for the record, the real event happened in 93, NOT 91.

They did have some accurate weapons and gear though-- In fact I would have prefered if they featured all current gear-- Why? Becuase they would look better-- Rangers would be sportin their SPEAR Ranger Armor with Aimpoint Scope-equipeed M4s-- They would look awesome-- And current rangers is not what we see very often--

Guess what though: current Rangers as of today are not current Rangers as of 1993.

i dont know what your speaking about i just said it would be cool to see the actors in BHD wear current ranger gear like SPEAR Ranger Armor and M4s and MICH helmets etc.

Ehh, I really haven't seen anyother vests that have those gargantuan pouches on the back like the D.O.A.V., but like I said, I haven't seen any. I was gonna backup my answer but my source has since my last visit, changed it's web design. I was gonna say goto www.store.yahoo.com/opsgear/delopasvesdo.html. At one time it said "Vest used in movie Black Hawk Down". I watched it a couple hours ago and I found what looked kinda like a D.O.A.V., I zoomed in the picture and brightened it and I'm sure I saw a D.O.A.V.. Let me figure out which scene it is and I'll let ya know.

Digitalghost, the movie is based on an event that happened in 1993, back then they didnt have that kind of gear, which is why the movie uses the gear it did, because if they used currently issued gear it wouldnt be as realistic to what actually went on there.

and one more thing, STOP SMOKING CRACK! :slap:

zach, the vests that most of the actors wore during the flim didnt have that leather no-slip pad on the upper part of the vest, and you can mount pouches like the ones hoot had on the back of his vest on the urban assault vest and the omega series vests as well. take note of the scene before the raid when eversman and hoot were sitting outside the hanger talking, compare the vest hoot was wearing to the blackhawk urban assault vest and tell me they are not the same.

Too much fantasies digital lol By the way, anyone know what is up with the new helmets on a land warrior? The one that is used by US troops now http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Sep1998/9809117b.jpg covers the ears, and the new one, doesnt cover the ears and looks a lot higher, i saw it on Mail Call, this is the one I think, it seems short tho... http://aric.inha.ac.kr/foreign_trend/aerospace/report/images/2001/information_04.gif

so does anyone know whats the story behind it? which are going to be used?

digitalghost

I dont know whats up with those Land Warrior helmets but I know one of them may be the current new-issue MICH helmet used by Airborne Infantry Units such as 101st/82nd etc, Rangers, SF and perhaps some other SF units in other branches:

EliteWolf: Im fully aware that it wouldnt be "realistic" however I dont think it would actually "hurt" to see them having 2003 gear and weapons--- The entire point of the movie was waht happened-- not what they wore and used when it happened--- yes its unrealistic but it would be cool TO ME and to other people who would have preferred to see 2003 gear :D

I don't think it freakin matters what they used. "Oh no, they used an M4 instead of a CAR15" or whatever, its minor details. Getting concerned over small pointless stuff is a waste of time.

Ghost can you get pics like that of the new helmet that doesn't cover the ears? I couldn't get a good pic of it I'm still looking, I think the new one is a bit higher.

rangerone
07-21-2003, 02:22 PM
Here is the other MICH helmet. It really isnt more new that the other. They both came out at the same time, but you dont see the one without ear protection very much.

I'm reasonably confident you can find sources other than Black Hawk Down (or Tears of the Sun, for that matter) to satisfy your gear-fetish. Go see S.W.A.T. or Bad Boys and get your jollies there.

Conceding the film was a Bruckheimer/Ridley Scott production, BHD was essentially a (recent) historical record. Op Irene was an exceptional iteration of American military force countering overwhelming opposition. It was also a sad instance of young soldiers lost for another American initiative our executive leadership ultimately betrayed. Why you consider it pat entertainment is beyond me, but that's just me.

Yeh, and why don't we have cowboys and indians running around with SAW's, M4's and NVG's ... in fact let's have a remake of Spartacus and give the Romans M4's etc and arm the slaves with AK's.

This armor is called a SPEAR armor with ranger option (horizontal PALS webbing on front instead of vertical rows originaly created). This was allegedly done per Rangers request, hence the name...

As for the vests used in BHD, most of them were just omega tac vest from which they removed most of the pockets and added a fastex buckle closing feature. If you look close at Bana's set-up, you'll see he's not wearing an urban assault vest because of the mesh you can clearly see on his right shoulder (where a Urban Assault vest would have plain nylon), and the ALICE straps on the upper back where he has a pouch attached (where a Urban Assault vest only has a hydratation pouch without any strap)...

SPEAR, ALICE, and MOLLE are acronyms they dindt say "hey guy lets call it alice becasue thats my daughetrs name, spear because its my faciourtie medieval weapon, and molle becuase thats my favourtei pet"

Special Operations Forces Equipment Advanced Requirements (SPEAR) www.sbccom.army.mil/products/cie/SPEAR_BALCS.htm

All Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment (ALICE) http://www.special-warfare.net/data_base/305_load_bearing/alice_lce_01.html

Modular Lightweight Load-Carrying Equipment (MOLLE) http://www.specialtydefense.com/

Whats the deal with this whole SPEAR RANGER Armor thing? Are you saying it exists or not? It's definitely not the MOLLE's Intercepter----- It's the SPEAR Armor--- But a RANGER version-- Heres another site for credibility--

SPEAR RBA

Tri-color desert and Woodland camo SPEAR Ranger Body Armor (RBA).

The armor is very similar to the original SPEAR body armor, except the he front MOLLE straps are sewn horizontally, and there is an drag-man handle at the back. The SPEAR RBA is currently used by the Army Rangers and Special Forces.
