Hello to everybody. I have a question about SPYDER in Georgia. Here is short video from youtube and a picture, where russian pyrotechnics works with frontal part of Python-5 missile. This could be prof, that georgian army use Spyder SAM system in august war against russian planes. As I know Spyder didnt' shot down any plane, but I would like to know, what was the fate of Spyder battery. Did Georgians evacuated them, were they destroyed or Russians captured them?

This is one of the newest SAM systems. Any more details and photos of SPYDER SAM system?

Thank you in advance.

One georgian forummember(milkavkaz) sayd

That Buk bring down 2 planes(Tu-22,Su-24), and rest(7 Su-25) was done by one battary "Spyder", wich only had Python-5 missiles, the israelis didn`t had time to deliver Derby....

So go figure, looks like Spyder was really there, and actually fired to,...did it hit, and how many....well,.....

Well.. Neither Russians nor Israelis dint report anything about SPYDER..

Could this missile be from a downed Georgian Su-25, that made a crash landing attempt? There was a video on Russian TV showing a belly-landed Georgian Su-25, with some S-8 rockets still not fired from underwing pods.
I have not found that video online yet.

How does Russia feels about this? Is it possible they feel like selling S300 to iran/syria as a retaliation?

Russia did not even talk about SPYDER during the conflict.. There have been reports about it.

And Russia already supplied Pantsyr to Syria which is equivalent of SPYDER.

As I know all shot downs were related to Buk-M1 and maybe some to Osa-AKM.

What happened to SPYDER in this war. Were they captured, destroyed or were evacuated in time? Who operates them?

Again.. No one knows what shot down Russian jets.. We even heard(from Russian sources) that it was Ukrainian SA-5 that shot down Tu-22..

Also nether Russia nor Georgia have said anything about Spyder.

I see. Well, all this missiles to which they related shot downs have one thing in common. They are all guided by radio signals, what could RWR detect and record.

Is it possible that georgian Su-25 launch Python missile?

Why not? Its quite possible.

S-200 and Osa-AKM use radio signals to guide missile to target while Buk with semi-active radar homing must have radar lock on on target. All this radio signals could be detected on RWR, because they have far larger power than search radars. IR guided missiles don't need any radio signals.

I know that.. But i thought you meant that all missiles that shot down Russian aircraft were radar guided.

The problem is always in details.

I didn't say that all missiles that shot down russian planes were radar guided, but that missiles to which they related shot downs are radar guided (S-200, Buk-M1, Osa-AKM). In that case they could collect RWR records from black boxes and ID missiles.

Given that the Su-25KM ("Scorpion") upgrade program was performed in cooperation with Elbit, why not? Most probably it would not be Python 5, but earlier variants.

Nobody has posted photos of a Georgian Spider yet, so more likely this is an air-to-air missile.
The forward part of the missile is relatively intact. Is it possible the warhead did not explode or the missile did not self-destroy properly? I am curious.

The warhead on a missile is not necessarily at the front, especially on one with a seeker head. It would appear that the warhead functioned fine. The large round object at the rear of the seeker head shown is a compressed gas bottle, probably used to actuate the control surfaces shown.
