Poland played 8, won 4, drawn 1 and lost 3. In the end they came third (Hence no qualification.) in their group behind Sweden and Latvia.

But it`s spectacular i like also.

Rugby i like.

Football i like a lot too bad Romania was left out for Euro 2004.

Greece topped their group, they've been in good form for a while, Portugal blatantly underestimated them, and should put the younger players on first, the "golden generation" are too old

*An interview with Figo, before the kickoff. It's a little sad reading it, because it was before we lost, but it also gives me more hope.

The most gilded talent of Portugal's 'golden generation', Luís Figo goes into the finals of UEFA EURO 2004™ knowing that, with home advantage, his side will never have a better chance to fulfil the promise his team-mates showed as FIFA World Youth Championship winners back in 1989 and 1991.

Portuguese duty
And while for many players at the final, having a brilliant tournament is a dream scenario, the 31-year-old and his colleagues almost feel they have a duty to excel. "Every single member of this Portugal team knows that we have a very special chance to do something important for this country over the next few weeks," he told euro2004.com.

Unmissable opportunity
"It's simply an opportunity we have to exploit," added Figo. "We have a strong team with good individual players, so the whole of this country feels that we are capable of having a great tournament."

Collective responsibility
As a senior member of a squad that mixes age and guile with youth and passion, such expectations could have weighed heavily on Figo's shoulders, but he insists that this is not a problem. "Because of my own international experience there is an extra responsibility on my shoulders, but I don't feel under too much pressure," said the Real Madrid CF star. "We're a team and every player in our squad has a role to play. Every person involved has an important duty to deal with this month."

Coach's burden
An enormous burden has been laid at the feet of coach Luiz Felipe Scolari as he aims to navigate Portugal's path through Group A. Starting with the tournament opener against Greece in Porto, the Brazilian must also bring Portugal through games against Spain and Russia unscathed to reach the quarter-finals.

Unpredictable opponents
"Normally you would expect Spain and ourselves to go through, but in football you never know for sure," mused Figo. "I don't know too much about Russia, but Greece will be strong first-match opponents. They proved in qualification that they are a tough side who mean business. But overall I am confident that we can take care of them. Then we will think about our friends from Spain!"

No doubt
The meeting with Iñaki Sáez's squad certainly looks like Portugal's biggest group stage challenge, but after a disappointing FIFA World Cup finals in 2002, the wide midfield player is convinced that his side are ready to take on all comers - and even emerge triumphant in the final on 4 July.

Favourable conditions
"At the last World Cup this Portugal team was not at the same sort of level we are at now, so I am confident we will do a lot better this time," he said. "The conditions are in our favour and I can guarantee that every player will give everything they have to achieve success.

Making history
"I feel in very good shape going into this tournament," he added. "I believe I can help Portugal to win EURO 2004™ this summer. I trust my team-mates very much, and I will give everything to try and help us make history.

Local pride
"I am looking forward to EURO 2004™," he concluded. "The authorities have done a great job preparing the country, so I am sure that the tournament will be a huge success. Portugal is a great country, with lovely people and wonderful beaches. This is my country and I am proud to represent it."

Valerón sparks Spanish win

by Matthew Spiro from the Estádio Algarve

An inspired substitution from coach Iñaki Sáez helped Spain get their UEFA EURO 2004™ campaign off to a perfect start in Faro-Loulé as Juan Carlos Valerón came off the bench to score with virtually his first touch and seal three important points in Group A.

Valerón for victory
With Greece having unexpectedly defeated hosts Portugal earlier in the day, both sides knew that a victory would make qualification for the quarter-finals a distinct possibility. However, in the event Valerón's cool finish on the hour proved enough, while Russia ended with ten men as Roman Sharonov was dismissed for a second yellow card having brought down substitute Fernando Torres.

Fitness boost
Spain lined up as expected after David Albelda shook off a muscle strain to link up with Valencia CF team-mate Rubén Baraja in midfield, while Joseba Etxeberria, Raúl González and Vicente Rodríguez formed an attacking trio behind Fernando Morientes. Russia adopted a more cautious approach, with coach Georgi Yartsev opting for Dmitri Bulykin as a lone striker, allowing winger Rolan Gusev to come into a five-man midfield.

Spanish surge
Spain started at a ferocious pace and had Russia's reorganised defence under pressure as early as the third minute. Baraja's pinpoint pass found Raúl in space in the penalty area but the Spanish striker shot wide of the far post. The Russians were soon stretched again as Raúl threaded a pass through for Morientes but his left-foot shot was blocked by Sharonov.

Izmailov influential
Spain continued to dominate territorially but Russia slowly gained in confidence and mounted their first serious attack on 16 minutes. Marat Izmailov's right-wing cross drifted over Carles Puyol to the ummarked Bulykin, but his tame volley was blocked. Izmailov was Russia's brightest player in the opening stages and he threatened again minutes later, flashing a long-range shot wide of Iker Casillas' far post.

Vicente verve
Vicente's influence on the left wing grew as the half went on and his darting burst and precise cross set up a glorious chance for Morientes on 36 minutes. The striker's header was brilliantly saved by Sergei Ovchinnikov and although the rebound fell to Etxeberria, he miscued from close range.

Casillas called upon
The chance brought the game to life and Dmitri Alenichev almost opened the scoring at the other end seconds later, jinking between Carlos Marchena and Puyol but Casillas was equal to his chip. Russia finished the half on top and Casillas had to be alert once more as Alenichev cut into the box after a quickly-taken corner and forced the goalkeeper to parry at the near post.

Raúl chance
Yartsev introduced playmaker Vladislav Radimov for Gusev at the break, but the second half started in similar vein to the first with a tide of Spain pressure. Etxeberria twice escaped his marker on the right wing, first cutting back for Baraja whose shot was blocked, then delivering a teasing cross that was headed wide of the far post by an unmarked Raúl.

Instant impact
Spain made their first changes just before the hour mark, with Valerón and Xabi Alonso replacing Morientes and Baraja - and the switch paid immediate dividends as Valerón scored within 36 seconds. Puyol burst past Dmitri Sennikov on the right and delivered a low cross that Valerón coolly worked onto his left foot to score from close range.

Spain on top
Russia reacted by sending on Dmitri Sychev as a second striker but the goal lifted the Spanish and they began playing with more fluency. Raúl might have doubled the lead, shrugging off two defenders before shooting just over from 20 metres while Vicente had two late chances, but Spain had already done enough.

How will the English get on tonight, I think France are in the same posistion as Portugal, so many talented youngsters but there are 5 or 6 players that should have called it a day after the WC 2002. So my prediction an England win or a nerve wracking draw.

http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/fo/euro2004/index.html

Typical, focus on overhyped players, you'd think zidane and beckham were the only ones playing.

I think it was heskey's lunge that did it, he's crap he was out of position, he can't tackle, and there were two defenders ready to deal with the problem. He gave away an unessesary chance to the French in the dying minutes, how could he not be at fault? and quite simply if the first goal hadn't happened nor would the second one.

BOTTLES THROWN AT POLICE

Thirty-two England fans were arrested in a second night of violence on the Algarve in Portugal, police said today.

Trouble broke out again at the same spot in Albufeira where fans were arrested 24 hours earlier.

Portuguese police spokesman Captain Manuel Jorge said 32 England fans had been arrested, to add to the 12 in custody after the first night of rioting.

One fan detained was taken to hospital with an injury to his eye.

Capt Jorge said: "It happened at the same time and the same place as the night before.

"There were about 300 of them. They were singing, and some of them were racist to some black people who were there.

"At around 2am they began throwing bottles and glasses into the road. They were also throwing tables and chairs at the police.

"We had to use horses and dogs to bring the situation under control, and we had to order the closure of other bars in the area and evacuate the people from them.

"We had the situation under control by 4am."

The 12 England fans arrested following the first night of violent clashes were led into court in handcuffs today.

One of the 12 said "I'm innocent" as he was led into the courthouse in Albufeira.

The men were arrested along with a Russian and a Portuguese man after fighting broke out near the La Bamba bar in Albufeira.

One of the men was wearing shorts covered in bloodstains and had his arm in a cast.

Last night's trouble again centred around the town's main strip of bars - around the La Bamba bar - and at its height saw officers charging into fans, who scattered before regrouping to taunt them.

The violence has wrecked the good image of England fans who had been praised by local police for their behaviour after their team's defeat by France on Sunday.

British officials have stressed that the offences were not organised football violence.

As much as i love Spain, i'd like to see a draw or a a win for this match, this Euro is so far very exciting because nothing happens like it should for small teams :)

As for Portugal - Russia, well since the best rusian attacker has been fired because he critizized the team's coach and since Portugal really can't loose like that at home, i'd say Portugal 3 - Russia 0.

it doesn't say here that the local police went it and were obviously scared that they might have to deal with hooligans, which they didn't in fact. This meant that the police went in hard expecting the worsed and aggravating the situation, lots have witnesses said that including the people that weren't involved and were watching it from their balcony.

m8, don´t believe in that. A lot of witnesses also said that the brits started to trow chairs and tables at the police and to some bars. You don´t ear that on Sky News, I understand. But one thing is for sure - if you´re doing **** you are gone get some violence in retribuition too.

There´s no friendly riot police. When the order is to move on, spread the crowd, then you go on for real.
There is no excuse for the behavior of some brits in Albufeira.

I was talking about the first "incident" and there was video of it.. I don't believe everything the fans say but then on the other hand I don't believe everything the portuguese press say... in the first incident it was theGNR themselves that admited they had gone in a bit hard.

Portugal restore home pride

by Adrian Harte from Estádio da Luz

Hosts Portugal restored their UEFA EURO 2004™ hopes as goals at either end of a thrilling encounter from Maniche and Rui Costa gave them a hard-fought win and ended Russia’s dreams of reaching the knockout stages.

Improved Portugal
Maniche seized on his FC Porto team-mate Deco’s pass after seven minutes to fire in the first goal before Rui Costa converted fellow substitute Cristiano Ronaldo’s cross one minute from time as Portugal bounced back from their opening match defeat by Greece with a much-improved display. Russia had to play for over 45 minutes with ten men after goalkeeper Sergei Ovchinnikov was sent off on the stroke of half-time for handling the ball outside the area.

Bulykin dropped
Both starting lineups revealed surprises. Russia's two enforced changes were no shock with Dmitri Loskov and Aleksei Bugaev coming in for the expelled Aleksandr Mostovoi and the suspended Roman Sharonov. But Georgi Yartsev's decision to drop Dmitri Bulykin and play FC Zenit St. Peterburg youngster Aleksandr Kerzhakov in attack supported by his fellow 21-year-old Marat Izmailov raised eyebrows among the Russian minority at the Estádio da Luz.

Porto quintet
Luiz Felipe Scolari provided yet more surprises. The decision to introduce Deco for Rui Costa in the playmaking role was expected but the defensive cull that saw Paulo Ferreira, Rui Jorge and Fernando Couto supplanted by Miguel, Ricardo Carvalho and Nuno Valente was less predictable. The net effect was the Portugal had five players from UEFA Champions League winners Porto lining up against club colleague Dmitri Alenitchev.

Maniche strikes
That Porto combination worked to wonderful effect for Portugal after just six minutes. The ball was worked to Deco from a Luís Figo free-kick and Porto's adopted son drilled a dangerous low ball into the box. Club colleague Maniche controlled superbly before firing into the bottom corner beyond Ovchinnikov for his first ever international goal.

Smertin booked
Russia were rocked and pinned back in their own half, their frustration heightened when defensive linchpin Aleksei Smertin received a booking after 16 minutes ruling him out of Russia's final Group A match against Greece. Minutes earlier, Russia had briefly lifted the siege on their goal but Alenitchev was crowded out in the area after fine approach play from Loskov and Kerzhakov.

Triple stepover
Portugal were struggling to translate their lion's share of possession into chances but upped the tempo approaching the half-hour mark when Carvalho headed over and then Pauleta narrowly failed to reach Figo's cross, delivered after the Portuguese captain had delighted the crowd with three stepovers. Then after 31 minutes Deco volleyed wildly over from close range and, seven minutes later, Maniche and Deco almost played in Pauleta only for a fine interception by Bugaev.

Ovchinnikov off
Portugal were quite literally given a helping hand on the stroke of half-time when Ovchinnikov was sent off after handling outside his area as he raced from his goal to deny Pauleta. The talismanic goalkeeper was expelled and Evgueni Aldonin was sacrificed as reserve keeper Viacheslav Malafeev came in but Russia escaped further censure when Figo curled the resultant free-kick wide.

Stubborn Russia
Malafeev was forced into action five minutes after the restart when he dived full length to his right to turn away Nuno Valente's powerful drive. But Portugal were struggling to exploit their numerical advantage and the increasingly influential Andrei Kariaka flashed an effort across the face of goal and then stung the fingers of Ricardo with a fierce shot as Russia refused to accept their fate meekly.

Malafeev magic
Nuno Gomes and Rui Costa replaced Pauleta and Simão Sabrosa as Portugal sought greater urgency and the changes almost brought instant reward after 64 minutes. An excellent move saw Nuno Gomes forward Deco's pass to Figo but his shot was brilliantly turned on to the post by Malafeev with Deco seizing on the rebound only to fire the ball over the bar.

Deco drive
Russia pushed hard for an equaliser but failed to threaten Ricardo’s goal even after the introduction of Dmitri Bulykin. Instead Portugal exploited the increased space and their own late replacement Ronaldo crossed for Rui Costa to score and seal a deserved victory.

Bad news for spain and portugal, they most likely result would have the side that wins play france in the quarter final.

The only way that portugal would not paly france if they beat spain or vice versa is for greece to lose against russia or france to do badly against the swiss or the croatians.

and unless there are upsets England will probably face the Greeks in the quater final.

that was because the heat, both teams are sluggish, I think it's a bit unfair that france don't have to play an afternoon game. All the games being played at 5 are much more sluggish and sloppy than those started in the evening.

Haas didn't deserve the red, that referee was ****e, he just stayed around the middle of the pitch and made it obvious he was to far from the action all the time by sending off the swiss player for very little.

The result is logical because England team = good and Switzerland = not as good.
But considering that Switzerland didn't play bad at all during this match, at least scoring one goal would have been nice for them but they didn't...

He stopped the ball with his hand. When the goalkeeper kicked the ball it flew towards his belly, but then he truned around and he touched the ball with the hand, he made the ball hit the hand and not the goalkeeper.

Tie-breaker as follows:

(a) Greater number of points obtained in the matches between the teams in question

(b) Goal difference resulting from the matches between the teams in question (if more than two teams finish equal).

(c) Greater number of goals scored in the matches between the teams in question (if more than two teams finish equal).

(d) Goal difference in all the group matches.

(e) Greater number of goals scored in all the group matches.

(f) Coefficient of points from the last two qualifying competitions for the final rounds of the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004 (points gained and divided by the number of matches played).

(g) Fair Play conduct of the teams (final tournament).

(h) A drawing of lots by the Organising Committee.

Criteria (a) to (h) above are not applicable under these circumstances :
If two teams meeting in one of the last group matches have the same number of points, the same goal difference and the same number of goals, and if this match stands at a draw at the end of normal time, then the ranking of these two teams will be determined by kicks from the penalty spot.
(note : UEFA Regulations for the European Football Championship 2004 do not explain what happens when there are 3 teams with the same number of points, the same goal difference and the same number of goals after all group matches ended and at the same time the result in the last group match between any 2 of these 3 teams is a draw - the Regulations are not clear on how is the ranking determined when 1 of the 3 teams is not taking part in the penalty shoot-out)

You are a pretty average team when Zidane doesn't play good, it was proved today.

It's also about the crowd and the people that support the team, when you see that a crowd of 10,000 croatians make much more noise then a crowd of 20,000 Francies you feel greater appeal towards the Croatians. Anyway they also played better.

that doesn't make a difference denmark has a strong defence, they kept out Italy. Also Bulgaria like everyone else are going to suffer in attack because of the heat of the earlier match, which will make them impotent.
It will be like england vs switzerland, slow because of the heat but they will get a good score in the end, sweden would have been the same if they had played the hot match.. it makes a real difference.

I found myself cheering the Croatian goals, only to find that it would be better if the French won the match, how insane is that?

So many great end of group stage games too, Sweden and Denmark, and Portugal and Spain, luv it!

Henry who? (kiss of death here, next game he'll probably score a hatrick)

For the Brits here; Anyone see the footage of Zidane before his pen against England? He puked his guts up in the penalty box, i mean properly spewed up, then took the shot 10 seconds later rofl

Also, Henry and Dessaily were almost complaining about how the other teams they played were defending deep and attacking them whenever they got the chance, and filling the midfield with players, thus choking their flamboyant syle!!! WTF??? What do they expect them to do?

Italy did a great game. No offense about that. I would actuallly say that Italy played betterr with out Totti. If Italy keep this way they will win euro 2004. But it was bad for them to go defensive in the seekend half. Sure, Sweden pushed them back, but they should try to do a little bit more offensive in the 2:e half. You can't go for a 1-0 result, because someone is always score in the 80 - 90 minute.

Sweden played bad. Their defensive and offensive didn't work in the 1:e half. I hope they will play better against Denmark even if a draw is enough to play quater final.

Ibrahimivic's goal was pure luck... Damn... Swedes have used the whole luck limit today... Kudos Italia UR the Champions !!!
No, I would say that you are an idiot.
Ibrahimovic did a great game under the whole match. You can't say it was lucky when he is one of eurpes most technical player.
EVen if the italian goal-chances was a little bit more (not much) was the swedish chances much danger.

Go Sweden, it will totally screw up my predictions for the cup, but i wish you luck. I went to Stockholm a while ago and loved the place, everyone is so friendly, but that might have something to do with the fact that all the Swedes mistook me for a Swede (even in the airport, which is always full of foriegn tourists)

Tell me, how big is the Denmark v Sweden game? Is it like England V Scotland? England V Argentina? Full of history? Animosity? Unsettled scores?

Not really. Denmark has definitely a shorter history of playing football in the championships (at least they haven't really been considered a somewhat serious threat until last 10-15 years). I think playing games against our nordic neighbours is rather friendly affairs but I know our smaller neighbours sure likes beating us...

Sounds like you're building a history between yourselves there, if the smaller neighbours enjoy beating you it won't be long until you are out for revenge if they do....
Sounds like England v Scotland games, basically Scotland are a far worse team than England, but when they play each other, both teams fight for their lives, so you never know what might happen.

Well.. In the 2:nd half Sweden was the better team and a draw was right.

Btw.. Why is it that England aaaalways think that they have a team good enough to win?? When did they win something? Oh thats right.. 1966!!!

last time we won anything was le tournoi in 97

only the worlds top teams were entered, France, Brazil, England and Italy and we won!

it finished

1. England
2. Brazil
3. France
4. Italy

'ave it!

but seriously, england almost always a decent team and the best thing about football is that any of the decent teams can win, just as easily as the favourites can lose it. Especially in the european cup

czechoslovakia '76
france '84 (they were only decent back then, except platini)
denmark '92
czechs almost made it again in '96

England definately have a chance of winning it as do sweden, czech rep and spain/portugal (you could put holland in this group too because of the arguments). All these teams are the ones other than the favourites that can do it.
