It is of course the contest of the ground that allow huge crates to be made and of course the bomb it self. But the size of that hole, sure it wasn't a larger bomb or something? It did look like solid ground and that crate is just HUUUGE.

JDAM is GPS guided, not laser ;)

Who said it was a JDAM? It could have been a GBU-27 or GBU-10 for all we know. p-)

Hmmm... look at the file name (it could be wrong, but we have no reason to believe so)

Hey is that what ODA574 (I think it was 574 but could be wrong) got hit by in A-stan? The ODA that had responsibility for Karzai's mob.

Its a GBU-31 (Mk-84). You can tell by the 'pointy' nose (no LGB tube) of the nose plug.

I looked up the cratering data at work, and depending on the soil (this stuff was soft), and the fuze delay (30 or 60 ms) you're looking at a crater about 20-30' deep, and 40-50' in diameter. This was likely dropped on one of the Navy ranges (my guess is either China Lake, or Fallon) - why? Nellis doesn't have ground water (see the pool in the crater) that close to the surface.

Edit: That was dropped during a Combat Hammer (A-G WSEP) at UTTR (Utah Test & Training Range) - the Navy doesn't do WSEP, they call it something else.

I agree with the above. In addition, it didn't have the tail fins of an LGB (all have very large rear control fins that fold out after the bomb is dropped).
