Role-play prepares troops for Afghanistan
EDMONTON - Local soldiers bound for Afghanistan will spend the weekend in a replica of their Kabul camp as they role-play virtually every type of incident, accident or mishap they might encounter during their upcoming six-month deployment.

I read both these articles this morning in the paper, but i cant find the full stories on the net. I ll try and get them tomorow

Air force suspends Alberta squadron leader
The popular commander of a fighter squadron based in Alberta has been suspended from duty while military officials investigate whether he inappropriately used a twin-seat CF-18 fighter.
The allegations involve one or more flights by Lt. Col. Shawn Brryne from Cold Lake to Victoria airport, said Col.Duff Sullivan, commander of 4 Wing Cold Lake.

"As the wing commander here in Cold Lake, I requested that the National Investigation Service initiate the investigation to look into allegation of the possible misuse or inappropriate use of the resources and assets by the commanding officer of 416 Squadron," Sullivan said Friday. "It involves the use of a CF-18 aircraft."

Sullivan said whenever there are allegations against a commanding officer, they must be investigated by the NIS. While the investigation is underway, the officer must be temporarilly suspended from duty.

At the time of his suspension, Byrne was already scheduled to leave 416 squadron on July 14 for a new posting at 1 Canadian Air Division Headquarters in Winnipeg.

Byrne is scheduled to take a French language course that is several months long, Sullivan said. Byrne's scheduled July 14 change-of-command cerimony will still take place.

In recent years, cross country flights using the 2 seat CF-18s have occasionally been controversial. For decades, fighter pilots have been encouraged to make training flights on weekends to make use of planes that might otherwise sit in hangers.

"If a pilot need to do cross-country IFR (instrument flight rule) training, there are autherized airports with proper security," Sullivan said "It's not unusual."
Victoria is one of those authorized airports, said Sullivan.

Two years ago Canadian Alliance MP Art Hanger raised the issue of personal flights in the House Of Commons after he learned a Cold Lake pilot had used a CF-18 to fly to Sarnia(Ontario), were he attended the military funeral of a colleague he had once served with. That pilot was already scheduled to use his fighter to deliver parts to a base in Winnipeg, so he obtained permission to fly on to southern Ontario.

After Hanger raised the matter in the House Of Commons, a military spokesman said landing and taking off from the Sarnia airport was considered worthwhile training, ,since the airport had no radar controllers and the pilot would have to do a visual approach to the airport.

"All our pilots are allotted 7.5 hours of flying per year for cross-country flying," 4 Wing Spokesman Leah Gillespie said at the time. "The perpose is to give pilots the oppurtunity to fly to different aerodromes."

At one time, the pilots got to fly alot more. Ted White, a former Navy fighter pilot, recalled those days during the 2002 controversy. In the 1960s, when he was in the RCN, White would often borrow a jet trainer, stick a buddy in the back seat and fly from Halifax to Northern Ontario to waterski at his uncles cottage.

"Since we were in the navy and did most of our flying over the water, we were required to do at least 25 hours of instrument flying every quarter, ,just to keep our licences alive," White said. "That meant we had to get as much cross-coountry flying as possible every month, and we had to do it on the weekend."

White would often fly from Halifax to Toronto on instruments, ,land and have dinner, then fly home.During flights form Halifax to Fort William,Ont., (now thunder bay), White would practise low-level flying over the Great Lakes.

If he couldnt reach his uncle by phone when he stopped to refuel in North Bay, he would buzz his uncles home, then his cottage before flying onto the nearby airport where he would wait to be picked up.

It was all good practice said white, ,who left the navy in 1965 to join Air Canada.
