Title says it, instead of to the back of the Ar 15 towards the stock is it possible to modify a AR 15 and move the charging handle forward past the chamber, so that it is more ergodynamic? Has this been tried before?

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could move the charging handle on a colt to the forward assist so you can pull back on it like in counter strike

it would look way cooler and be more 1337

It's fine the way it is. Have you ever handled/shot one?

It's an AR-10. Google it, you'll find plenty of pics.

How hard is it to own one in Canada?

Compared to the U.S probably much much harder. Oh yeah only 5 round rounds per clip :-(:-(:-(, 10 for handguns:-(:-(:-(:-(. But at least we do not have those stupid laws they have in California with that odd looking handle. Also we got more different types of Rifles here!!

P.S I always wondered which U.S state has the most leanent gun laws?

Vermont I think. Don't they have like no state gun laws at all, only federal ones apply?

Vermont, none other than the Federal level laws.

Worst is California right?

Most retarded.... some states you are realy limited to what you can have. DC is a zero tolerance to handguns I believe. NYC has some pretty heavy laws as well. Not just modifcations to fit descriptions. They are simply banned. I know those are not states but there are worse places than California.

As for an AR's charging handle location, it works great where it is. Most other weapons that have charging handles in a forward location require you to work rack the handle when loading a new magazine. The AR you simply slap the bolt release.

Unless you have a stopage and have to do sports in which case you have other things to worry about.

I really have no problem with the location either I just wondered if anyone tried doing that. In fact from what it looks like I would prefer where it is on right now rather then the Original Ar-10 location.

Quite a few competition shooters have added a more ergonomic second charging handle to the bolt carrier similar to AK's etc. But optics often interfere with that. Even better is of course charging handle in HK style.

I have seen them online before, some are just a handle attached to the bolt. Some people even cut a slot in the receiver if the handle goes on the left side. Better designs that I have seen, the handle does not reciprocate with the bolt.

Actually I'm not that big of a fan of the HK style. Yeah, it's fun to slap it forward. But aside from that, when pulling the charging handle back on my CETME I frequently hit the front of my scope. AKs and ARs have a much more pleasant and effective charging setup.

i much prefer a side charging handle. no more gas in your face. also the rear charging handle interferes with stocks that have a high cheek rest.
the question is should it be reciprocating or non-reciprocating? i understand the reasoning behind each and i think i prefer reciprocating.

I think American Spirit Arms has a side charging AR in 9MM, 308 and .223, but nothing on top of the receiver.

I looks more bulky though in my opinion.

Found a picture of it

Try american spirit arms. They have a cool side charging upper assembly that looks like an HK 91 style.

It's an AR-10. Some people still like to build them that way.

Go about 2/3 of the way down.

None of the modern AR-10's I have seen have those when did they get rid of them?

Armalite still makes the classic AR10 with charging handle in the carry handle called AR10B.
