I doubt it's intentional, there's a C9 at my unit whose safety catch would always fall out, leaving it hollow like in that picture. Probably just a wear & tear issue, it was easy to get it repaired.

actually from after action reports the m249 was second only to the m9 int he number of complaints it recieved. most where due tot eh weapons being plain worn out, some where held together by zip ties. its time to replace those in service with either some m249 or something else.

the saw really isnt all too bad to haul around. just takes a little while to get used to...oh, and to whoever called the M60 a light support weapon...there is nothing light about it. I hauled one around the woods of Ft. Lewis last summer for 3 days, and the bastard is heavy.

During ww2, soldiers had to haul guns like the Bren, etc around for miles on end, and the bren weighs circa 25lbs. Having carried my bren for a mile or so, I wouldn't moan having a 15lb weapon instead.

Man the SAW is a lot lighter, I have used the Bren and it is light compared to the MG42 :S

only pain I see is carrying ammo... and if u get ur squad mates to carry it no probs at all.

Yes, thats correct. The links are pushes out by the following cartridges in the feedtray, and the emty cases are ejected very violance on the wrightside, almost straight to the ground (+/- 30 centimeters to the wright of the gun), and bounzes straight up, after it hits the ground :D ! It's hard to find all cases when you fire the Minimi in the field :D

It may look nice but it did not perform up to expectation.

A comparison testing of M249 with other similar weapon namely the Ultimax 100, Colt and HK. M249 perform badly in many areas.

What modification (if any) is needed to go from belt feed to m16 magazines?
Or is the belt simply removed and replaced with a mag?

As long as you take the usual desert/dusty precautions and not over oil your weapons your Minimi should do it's required job mate ;)

The most common cause of weapon stoppages in desert/dusty conditions is the operator using too much oil in their personal, section or Platoon weapon.

When you go into 'full on' desert conditions, the desert grains are as fine as talcum powder and this gets *everywhere* in/on you, your weapons and your gear. If your weapon has too much oil, these fine grains are trapped and grind away at your protective finishes and your weapon = not cool. You'll have very quick problems if the fine sand gets caught in your feed mech/pawls and cocking action.

http://anzac.mdsnews.com/attachments/kkoori/meinmalaysia03.JPG
Me and my Minimi (with some mini-Malaysians) in 2002 on the Malaysia/Thailand border :)

If the Minimi does have a small 'environmental weakness' it is in wet conditions.

When the Minimi is wet for even a short period of time, you'll have to carefully watch the gas system for rust.

The above is from my 7+ year usage of F89/M249 Minimi as both a user and instructor in not just desert, but jungle and urban training and deployments.

HTH :)

This is especially true with the ammunition which is left exposed. and I'm sure we've all had a 200rd plastic drum fall off in the middle of a run and all our ammo get's dragged in the mud/dust. The 100rd soft pouches will hopefully allieviate most of this problem.

Speaking of which, I'm still seeking an answer to how one would easily make such a pouch using readily available materials. in the book Blackhawk Down there is mentioned that one of the Delta fellows does the rangers a great favour when he teaches them how to do this, but does not elaborate further. Any of the D-boys on this forum care to give me a hint? The one mentioned in the book sadly did not survive the battle in Mogadishu, so hopefully the secret didn't die with him.

Bothers me that years after we've fielded the newer design, that the troops are still forced into using the older green ammo box.
