Two Iraqi Children Wounded by Attack on Base
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two Iraqi children were wounded June 10 when mortar rounds meant for a Coalition base here fell short.
Two small boys playing on bikes in the area were wounded in the incident. One of the boys suffered minor wounds, but a Coalition aircraft evacuated the other boy to a local hospital where he remains in serious condition.
Coalition leaders in the Al Thawra district called the attack "another example of the wanton disregard for innocent Iraqi lives that the Mahdi's Militia and other anti-Iraqi forces continue to display."
"Mahdi's Militia and other anti-Iraqi forces continue to conduct operations that endanger the lives of their fellow Iraqis," said Col. Robert "Abe" Abrams, commander of the 1st Cavalry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team.
Soldiers who witnessed the attack gave immediate medical attention to the boys. Realizing that one was severely injured, they called for a medical evacuation helicopter.
