Syria protests to UN over US raid
Oct 28 01:00 PM US/Eastern

Syria on Tuesday protested to the UN Security Council over what it branded a "barbarous" US helicopter raid on a border village near Iraq and decided to close two American institutions in Damascus. The Syrian government also indicated Sunday's deadly raid launched from Iraq could have repercussions on its ties with Baghdad by postponing a November 12-13 meeting of the Syrian-Iraqi high commission.

Baghdad initially appeared to condone the helicopter-borne raid by US troops as aimed against insurgents who infiltrate Iraq, before joining in condemnation of the assault on Tuesday.

In a letter to UN chief Ban Ki-moon, Syria protested over "this aggressive act and expects the UN Security Council and member countries to assume their responsibility by preventing a repetition of this dangerous violation."

It called for the Security Council "to hold the aggressor responsible for the deaths of the innocent Syrian nationals," the state news agency SANA reported, quoting the letter.

The Syrian cabinet also decided to close the US cultural centre and the American school in Damascus in response to the raid.

From the people who invented "Hama rules" to call this raid "barbarous" is a laugh.

Itīs their goddamn right.

Of course, but it doesn't make it any less hypocritical and pointless.

I would think the Syrians are getting used to foreign powers flying about buzzing palaces, bombing installations and dropping in on building sites...

If Assad can't constrain elements within his country from actively destablising the region then he could have predicted a response.

"this aggressive act and expects the UN Security Council and member countries to assume their responsibility by preventing a repetition of this dangerous violation."

Then stop providing a free heaven for terrorists and foreign combattants.

"to hold the aggressor responsible for the deaths of the innocent Syrian nationals"
Yes innocents once you removed the AKs lying next to theirs dead bodies.

Maybe we should bomb one of his sons again, maybe he'll get the picture.

Besides the high number of Islamic nations at the UN who will take Syria's side, the Syrians need to realize that 22% of the UN funding is from the USA

Actually the lack of a serious response by other regional powers besides Syria's weird bedfellow is deafening. Egypt mumbled something, but not much, they like those defense $'s.

Abu Ghadiya isn't some random dude the US made up, he is known in the region. The very fact that he was present makes it pretty difficult for the Syrians to get too uppity about it, doing so only brings to light information that could serve to justify US actions.

So the US can't violate the sacrosanct Syrian border, but it's fine for Syria to leave its border porous thereby facilitating terrorist lines of communication? Syria has failed to act on its obligations as a sovereign State.

Do you want to save your cake or eat it? You can't have it both ways.

From Beirut to Jerusalem by Thomas L. Friedman. "Hama Rules" is a chapter in the book where he explains on example of the Hama massacre the principles by which ME works. This chapter alone makes the book worth reading, the best most concise introduction to ME, IMHO. The book in whole is exceptionally well written, it basically reads rather as a novel, than just as a journalistic account. I found the first part (about author's years in Beirut) particulary fascinating (the last part is bit less - it's about our local Israeli reality).

"Grab them by the balls, and their hearts and minds will follow"

Something tells me these Syrians effected will not be providing any aid to terrorists any time soon. Can't fight Politically correct wars, if the enemy doesn't either.

Syria was in on the raid, they're taking a page out of the Pakistan playbook.

"We condemn these attacks, and we don't want them to continue, especially not tomorrow at 5pm at the following grid coordinates . . . please don't hit them with a hellfire."
