Members of the African-American leadership network Project 21 are calling upon the Rainbow/PUSH organization to apologize for derogatory comments about fans of NASCAR auto racing made by Rainbow Sports director Charles Farrell.

In a recent interview with CNSNews.com, Farrell said, "there is a perception that stock car racing is a good ole' boy's Southern redneck cracker sport."

"Webster's definition of 'cracker' and 'redneck' point out that these words are meant to be 'used disparagingly.' Just because it's against the mostly-white NASCAR fan base doesn't make it any less offensive," said Project 21 director David Almasi.

Farrell's comments come at a time when others are under fire for insensitive comments. Chicago Cubs manager Dusty Baker, who is African-American, is being urged to apologize for saying that blacks and Hispanics are better acclimated to sun and heat because of racial characteristics. Talk show host Michael Savage was fired by MSNBC after he made anti-gay comments on the air, though he subsequently apologized and explained that he thought the microphone was off. Only Farrell has so far gone without substantial criticism. This is ironic, since the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, of which Rainbow Sports is affiliated, is normally an outspoken monitor and critic of insensitive statements.

Farrell's comment is not the first Rainbow/PUSH slur against NASCAR. In early June Rainbow/PUSH Coalition board member Bill Shack called NASCAR "the last bastion of white supremacy" in professional sports.

Several high-profile sports figures have had their careers end because of racially insensitive comments. Marge Schott lost her ownership of the Cincinnati Reds after making a wide range of insensitive remarks. Al Campanis lost his job as general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers after he questioned the ability of blacks to manage in baseball. Dan Issel was let go as president and head coach of the Denver Nuggets after he yelled a racially-charged remark at a Hispanic heckler during a basketball game. And Jimmy "the Greek" Snyder was fired by ABC Sports as a football commentator after he said blacks were "bred [as slaves] to be better athlete[s]." All apologized, but nonetheless lost their status in professional sports.

Project 21's Michael King believes a double standard is in play.

"In sports, as in the rest of society, there is a double standard on race. If you're black and liberal, you get a pass on whatever you say no matter how politically incorrect. But if you're conservative and white - or black, for that matter - you're taken to task if your words aren't seen as politically correct," said Project 21 member Michael King. "If the playing field is supposed to be level and the comments from one side are cause for action, then similar comments from the other side of the field should be just as actionable. What Charles Farrell said was wrong, period - color notwithstanding."

The Rainbow Coalition, the ACLU, and Al Sharpton's hair need a real reexamination of what they were brought on line for and how proposterous they have become. The simple fact that the NAACP stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Come on. The ACLU was founded to defend civil liberties that were beinging infringed upon by the government. Noble enough, not to rally to the support of
assholes who get shot by the police for holding up liquor stores and then cry racism b/c they are black and the cop who put two in 'em is white. The ACLU is a joke. No one wants to take the risk of offending anyone anymore because they are so afraid of being called racist and having the ACLU jump down their backs.Yet I'm still refered to as a white man, but my neighbor is an African-American. You can't have it both ways. Then Kwazi Ibumdi or WETF his name is calls George Bush racist's b/c he does not show up for the annual NAACP freak-nik. It just so happens, that Bush was in Africa(a great place for a racist to be) during his invite. This man just gave 15 billion dollars to Africa to fight AIDs, 15 billion that could have been used to help with our economy or to bolster national defense. No $15,000,000,000 to a country where the AIDs epidemic is felt predominantly in the black population. Hello, Bill Clinton never gave 15 billion to Africa and he turned down a chance to appear at the same event and at the time he was not fighting mulitple wars, running a reelection campaign, trying to broker a peace between Palestine and Israel, attempting to balance the budget, and doing other run of the mill things that a President has to worry about in his twenty hour work day. DAMN IT THIS PISSES ME. Let's take a look a who the true racists are.

Civil liberties are a difficult area
you say you like Liberty and Freedom of Speech as long as its something you agree with . You only really know how free you are when you tests the edges. Personally Nambla sound like a bunch of child molestors who ought to be kneecapped at the very least. But unless they have broken a law you can't touch them.
Liberty means you can Disrespect God, country, military, or whatever.
As Voltaire said old french guy for the kids (look him up)
I may Disagree with everything you say. But I will fight to the death for your right to say them.
Just because your fighting for your fellow mens Freedom Does'nt mean they have to be grateful they can go off whine and whinge to there hearts content because there Free.

Am I wrong to say that whenever a white police officer shoot a black man, the question concerning racial influence is always raise???

First Saranoff, let's do the math. Four cops each carrying a Glock 19 with 16rds a piece. 4x16=64. So no there was no reloading. Diallo was acting suspicious(and don't give me any of that he was black and that was all the PC needed). He was looking into cars that were parked along the street, he also happened to fit the discription of a rapist who had been stalking the area. Same height, build, clothing, etc. The four anti-crime officers approached Diallo and ID'ed themselves and showed their badges. Diallo took off at a sprint and the four officers pursued. He ducked into a vestibule and up a flight of stairs, two of the officers entered the hall, guns drawn and ordered him to turn around, without turning, Diallo reached in his pocket and quickly turned as he was pulling out a dark object. The two police fired. The sound of the gunfire within the small vestibule echoed and sounded like more then just two men firing. As one of the officers, took a step backwards, he tripped and fell out of the vestibule onto his back on the sidewalk. The two other police officers who were outside and had yet to reach the vestibule saw their partner fall and believing he had been shot, stepped into the hall and opened fire. Tragically Diallo was holding his driver's liscense. Now was it a shame that he was killed yes. Could it have been prevented. Absolutely. But let's not jump all over the police officers for doing their job. They perceived a threat and reacted. Let's remember, he fit the description of a violent criminal, he ran from the police, and now was reaching for something when he was told to lie on the ground. Some of the pundits say well he did not understand English, he was an immigrant, he did not recognize them as police officer. Okay, but are the police supposed to know that he is not fluent in the language. He also had the presence of mind to reach for his wallet for identification. It was an accident, plain and simple. Get over yourself.
