View Full Version : What kinds of submachineguns are used by Cuba?
Does anyone here know what models of SMGs are in use or were used by the Castro government?

Thats a Wide time frame your asking.
Likely both M1928A1 & M1 Thompsons, M3 Greaseguns, MP38/40's, Cristobals, basically the full gamut of whatever Batista purchased or the Guerrillas were able to acquire. I've seen a Picture of a Winchester lever gun converted to a Submachine gun by Castros guerillas.
Then with the massive Soviet Assistance likely see PPsh41's, PPD's, etc.

As far as I know, smg are not in use in the FAR (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias), where you only see Kalashnikovs. Security personnel, however, also use (or used) UZIs and (I might be wrong here) Skorpions.

Actually, I meant after Castro took power.

Maybe the regular Army, but the various militias such as the MTT or EJT might be a different matter. BTW, where did Castro get those Uzis? Were they just the Belgian made models left over from the late Batista years?

Actually, I meant after Castro took power. They still would have used them for many years afterwards. Castro has been Dictator since 1960, thats a very long time in Firearms Design and Marketing. 48 years ago, the AR-10 was considered Radical, now it's considered Passe.

Polish AT officers were tutors for Cubans. After training, Cuban AT troops adopted Polish "US" (Ubior Skoczka - Para`s Suit) in black and Polish PM-63 "Rak".

Yeah, but I'm interested in mainly what Castro got from his ComBloc friends.

When was that? Also, does any other unit or faction of the FAR use the PM-63?

I will have to dig through my old magazines, but I read an article "I had trained Fiedel`s companieros" written by ex-policeman that was send to Cuba as instructor. As he was very keen on shark hunting, was given a nickname "Tienente Tiburon".
There was not any mention about the other Cuban troops that had been using PM-63.

Weren't some of those Brazilian URU's imported by Cuba also? Quite a few years back I purchased a small lot of URU submachine guns in south america and had them demilled into parts kits and shipped back here. When they got here they had that funky litle crest with the hat on a stick stamped on the left side of the mag housings. Dunno but I guess they were sold back or something? That was a cheap little subgun but I assume Cuba bought some of them at one time?
Well crud, I couldn't find any good pics but here is the best that I could do. Like I said, funky little gun only slightly better than a Sten.

Why? His rank was lieutenant. During Commie period of our history, Police was called Milicja (Militia), and military ranks were used by... militiamen. That true.

About 15 to 20 thousand Ingram Model 6 (M6) Submachine Guns were made and sold to the Cuban Navy and Peruvian Army.
