Gen Franco wanted to declare war on Portugal

Spain was ready to declare war on neighbouring Portugal to stem the perceived threat of communism during the final months of General Francisco Franco's dictatorship, it has emerged.

Carlos Arias Navarro, the last Spanish prime minister to serve under Gen Franco, met with US officials to garner support for such a move, according to documents held in the American National Archive and made public on Monday.
The declassified documents, released to Spanish daily newspaper El Pais, revealed that Gen Franco's government was "deeply concerned" by events across the border following the Carnation Revolution of April, 1974.
The event, a bloodless coup by the Left which effectively put an end to Portugal's authoritarian regime and set the nation on the path to democracy, sparked fears that Gen Franco's own regime could go the same way.
Mr Arias privately assured the Americans that "adequate precautions" were being taken to prevent "the events in Portugal from spilling over the Spanish border," a report from the time claims.
Six months before Gen Franco's death in November 1975 his prime minister met with the US deputy Secretary of State to express Spanish concerns and win backing for military intervention.
"Portugal posed a serious threat to Spain, not only because of the way the situation there was developing, but because of the foreign support it might ultimately receive, which could be hostile to Spain," wrote diplomat Robert Ingersoll to the then Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, in a report on the March 1975 meeting.
"Spain would fight the anti-communist battle alone if necessary," he summarised. "But it hoped that it would have the cooperation and understanding of its friends, not only in the Spanish interest but in the interest of all who thought the same."

Itīs funny because in Spain we always thought the opposite, that the americans were worried for the portuguese revolution, not Franco, he was too old, too ill and too tired for invade anyone.

What were the alliances like back in 75?
There was no EU yet right?

Did either Spain or Portugal had defense agreements with France, UK, Italy, Germany?

Portugal is one of the NATO original members, another aditional reason for stay in home, and not invade our neighbours, that year was more focused with Morocco, never Portugal.

For some reason we allways took Spain as the enemy.
It wasn't, IMO, a legit claim (never was in any spanish invasion ;)), since we took care of that problem (communism) on our own in a few months. It was more the case of fascist spain using the Cold War to blink an eye at the US, so that they would support they're entry to NATO. And portuguese left parties using the spanish ghost to gather people on their side.
If they had come... Well, maybe their leader would have returned to Spain in a stretcher, like John I of Castille did in 1385 :)

^ That's what I thought too...

What happens when two members of a same alliance start a war?

Marocco were well aware of the tension in Spain with the influence of communism in post-revolution Portugal - and the ideia of a invasion of Portugal. That's why they choose that period (end of the summer of 1975) to do the green march. They were well aware that spain couldn't handle two wars at the same time.

We only deployed troops against Morocco, so that should say something about this.
