That was easy. I am glad this important issue has been resolved.


The truth is, who is the world? The two countries that are the ones everyone freaked out about not supporting us in Iraq are France and Germany. They both elected Sarkozy and Merkel. Both more agreeable with Bush.

This was the most superficial and deceptive talking point of the election. It played off the fact that most Americans cannot name more that 2 other world leaders.

I've really always thought myself fortunate to be American no matter whos running the country, or what foreigners think. I look down upon those people who suddenly simply say their are proud to be American on the basis of who the president currently is be it Bush or Obama.

theres a couple of Americans and Canadians in the course im doing- we allways give them crap(jokingly of course) about oil and crap made cars, they didnt know how to take it the first month they were in Australia and they though we were having a go at them, but we were just joking.

Another good one is calling the Canadians 'wannabe yanks' and visa versa with the Americans. But all in all there good blokes and i hope the new president will help there country.

I'll tell you what, though. I was in Iceland shortly after 9/11 and I drank for free. A few years later, it seemed like that good will was squandered and I was some sort of antisocial asshole.

I'm not sure your birthright goes out of style, but certainly I can dine out a few times on the fact that my country was willing to elect a guy from a group that is only 12 percent of the population and he never made a big deal out of it. As Americans, neither should we.

I saw a slogan on a guys car that said "Proud to be an American" and I thought "What the hell does that mean?"

I'm fully Irish, and when I was a kid I would go to the St Patrick's Day parade and they sold a button that said "Proud to be Irish", but I knew that on Columbus day they sold the same button only it said "Proud to be Italian", then came Black Pride, and Puerto Rican Pride. And I could never understand national or ethnic pride, because to me Pride should be reserved for something you achieve on your own.

Being Irish isn't a skill, it's a f***ing genetic accident.

You wouldn't be proud to be 5'11". You wouldn't be proud to have a pre-disposition for colon cancer.
And then he gets to the entire "God Bless America" thang.

"God Bless America?" Is that a request? Is that a demand? Is that a suggestion? Politicians say it at the end of every speech, as if it was some sort of verbal tick that they can't get rid of.

He never cared about this country. He never has. He never will. He doesn't care about this country any more than he cares about Mongolia, Transylvania, Pittsburgh, the Suez Canal or the North Pole. He simply doesn't care, ok.

Listen, there are 200 countries in the world, do these people honestly think God is sitting around picking out his favorites?

Why would he do that?

Why would God have a favorite country? And why would it be America of all the countries? Because we have the most money? Because he likes our national anthem? Maybe it's because he heard we have 18 delicious flavours of classic Rice-O-Ronie?

If these people believe in God, they must have heard that God Loves Everyone, and he loves them equally. So why would these people ask God to do something that goes against his own teaching? Maybe they ought to check with that Jesus fella. They're always talking about "What would Jesus do"?

As Inat's post cleverly explained it, belonging to one nation does not automatically makes you better or worse than anybody else. It's a matter of pure coincidence. Being a Serb myself, I can only say that the guy described in text is a prototype of an idiot. Sadly, an overwhelming majority of world population functions the same way, with the obligatory opening sentence "you guys did this and you guys did that to (my city, my family, my people, my house, my country....you name it)". The fact is that the individual guilt should be the only parameter when measuring someone's responsibility instead of application of abstract principle of collective guilt. The name or the skin color does not make someone superior or inferior over others.......and the author of the article is a coward for not being proud of his country/citizenship when the times are bad and not only when "it's cool" to be American. The Serbs know the power of propaganda and generalizations all too well.

Most Americans couldn't find France and Germany on a world map... with bold print for country labels, no less. Sadder still, most can't name the leaders of our neighboring countries with the possible exception of Cuba. Even there they'd probably just say "Castro" not realizing Raul has [supposedly] taken the reins.

Regardless of whether we are beloved or not, we will be despised by somebody wanting to destroy us. The reality of the situation is the countries of the world are not in some big love-fest, this fact may come as a shock to some. We befriend an enemy of one nation we alienate another. Good luck on the foreign policy front Mr. President-elect.

I suspect in four years our so-called image will improve around the world, at least in the skewed polls, but at what cost? We will not be seen as leaders but followers, or worse - lap dogs, of whomever is in charge of the U.N.

That is true as well. People don't realize who his sponsors are.

Foreign policy is on their agenda, but various forms of corporate socialism tops it. Obama was much more popular in defence industry circles than McCain.

Cool to be an American? That depends on the individual.

We'll see how Obama does, but it will be refreshing not to be confronted with the Bush questions in every second conversation with foreigners. That certainly has little to do with coolness, but it will be a relief.

At least until the Obama questions come.
