I think the difference is in, he is a soldier and he knows th risk of his job, and this guy was a random civlian who the soldier shot in the face.

But yea, that's alot of money.

Two points strike me...

I feel for the bloke whose jaw got Para****ed - regardless of the sheer stupidity of his mates rolling around firing guns in a war zone near soldiers.

My grudge is not with his award - it is with the paltry 'awards' (nee insults) to injured British soldiers. If we can spunk millions on relaying the same stretch of road 5 times, we can poke some more money to those unfortunate enough to be hurt in the service of our nation.

Yes, they should be aware that their are inherent, serious risks to being a soldier. Does that mean the country should not extend the same duty of care to them as it does other state employees such as policemen, firemen and nurses - regardless of the fact that all of those already receive far better financial reimbursement than soldiers? Of course ****ing not.

At a time of heightened public respect and honour for our Forces (recruiting numbers UP incidentally), the Gov't continues its unabated campaign of displaying how out of touch it is with anything outside of the City.

We should look after our armed forces. God forbid, one day we may really need them.

"There were five other men in the car with Mr Bici and some were firing guns into the air as part of wild celebrations to mark a national holiday."

What a bunch of Einsteins.

If every government was forced to pay full compensation for every KIA and WIA, (not the insulting pittance they offer and most times try to avoid) there would be very little war in the world.

wow, is that what brave servicemen/women get to serve their country ? how could their MOD have that much extra money for a arse-wipe goofing around, but not enough (and short-changing) a soldier doing their duty ? ....

What a dissproportionate joke.

£2.4million? WTF Whose ass did they pull that figure from?

I don't see why people are making a big deal about this.

Both individuals were victimized. One obtained compensation through the civil court system. Another received what is essentially worker's compensation.

The civilian probably obtained compensation via tort - the MOD was basically legally responsible for his injuries, and the compensation was made to "make him whole" again. The MOD is not under that responsibility for soldiers injured by the enemy.

People are acting like getting shot in the face and disfigured for life is a joke.

I guess they were trying to send a message with this symbolic 2.4 million.

Also there is no such thing as "Kosovan" that is a term the media created
in the last 10 years. There is however Albanian.
It's not like this guy was walking down the street minding his own business and got shot. He was in a car that was armed and firing off rounds. I wonder what building the British troops were protecting from
Mr.Bici and his friends.

I would much rather have my face intact then $2.4 million compensation and have a mouth that looks like a bent hose nozzle.

-The article dates "06th November 2008" and Kosovo has been noticed and declared independent state for quite some time now, so a "Kosovan" would be right.

- X2 could not agree anymore with you on that.

- like loosing leg for HMG then - oh wait, we pay maimed squaddies a lot less.

blokes letting of rounds willy nilly is probably the very f**king reason we had to go in there in the first place - which makes yer man part of the problem. In his case, I dont feel sorry for him - anymore than I'd feel sorry for a paramilitary letting off rounds in front of squaddies in Northern Ireland.

Sorry but a car full of blokes shooting wildly into the air near unknown soldiers = you get whats coming...

The likelyhood was that it wasnt just innocent "national holdiay" celebrations, but a attempt at intimidation or to watch reactions perhaps as a prelude to an attack.

Galling that they hired a good enough lawyer to put the tax payer through it.

Also weve (Britain PLC) have killed Iraqis in much less justifiable circumstances (ie innocent man picked up then BEATEN TO DEATH in custody) and paid out relatively a fraction more... £2.83 mill

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baha_Mousa

Its galling that the fractional difference between the unjustified death and allegdly unjustifed shootings (£400,000) would probably equal about 4 of our brave service men or womans limbs :bash:

The MOD is not under that responsibility for soldiers injured by the enemy.

I think the phrase is "duty of care" and frankly with the snatch landdrovers and other farcical equipment shortages the MOD and government have been FAR short of the minimum expected.

The MOD probably wont live up to the bare minimum until one of those serviceman starts legal proccedings and actually hits them where it registers.
