Perry class Armament
1 × OTO Melara Mk 75 76 mm/62 caliber naval gun
2 × Mk 32 triple-tube (324 mm) launchers for Mark 46 torpedoes
1 × Vulcan Phalanx CIWS
4 × .50-cal (12.7 mm) machine guns.
2 × SH-60B Seahawk: Mk 46, Mk 50, or Mk 54 torpedo; AGM-114 Hellfire missile; 1 cabin-door-mounted M60D/M240 7.62 mm machine gun or GAU-16 .50 in machine gun
Lacking the Mk 13 missile launcher, the Perry class must be less capable offensively than contemporary warships.
What is the current function of the Perry class?
What was their function before the removal of the Mk 13s?
Are they necessary to the fleet?

It's a floating helicopter pad/missile decoy.
Seriously.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we don't have anymore Perrys on active duty anymore, right?

Nope, lots are still in service, mostly the longer ones.

I think there's something like 30 still in service, out of the 50-something built.

They are old, smelly, expensive and need to go...
We still have four left, all have been upgraded. The Aussie version is still fitted with the Mk 13 GLMS. Since the upgrade they have added VLS.

No. The LCSes are smaller (and a lot more expensive) than the Perrys, though depending on the modules they carry, might be more capable - or at least more modern. There is no area air defense capability for the LCSes (though the SM-1 system on the Perrys aren't very good anymore either).
That said, nobody has destroyers even remotely comparable to the Burkes, or cruisers like the Ticos. Except the Japanese and Koreans, who have their KDX and Kongo versions of the Burke.

My military background is not naval, obviously. So what we have left is an ASW platform (torpedoes and helo) with limited surface capability (76mm gun) and minimal AA (CIWS) capability? And I guess from what other posters are saying-- they smell too!
Oh yeah, and the added dividend that they are missle and torpedo magnets. So they have that going for them as well. Should be renamed the Kamikaze class.

How do the Perrys compare with their predecessor, the Knox class?
Hellfish

Knox-class FFs were dedicated ASW frigates. Perry's were more of a general-purpose frigate, with limited ASuW, ASW and AAW capability. The Perry's big advantage was that it could carry two SH-60 helicopters, whereas the Knoxes could only carry an old SH-2 Seasprite.
The Perrys are closest to the Brooke-class FFGs.

I'd hazard the US Navy easily has parity with these forces, think the carriers, cruisers and a destroyer fleet larger than most medium power navies to begin with.
Strange question.

I think CJackson was wondering if we're going to build a general purpose frigate class again. The LCS doesn't appear to be a frigate, but then the USN can afford to specialize while other navies can't.

LCS is supposed to replace Mine Countermeasure Ships, OHP-class Frigates, and some other smaller vessels. The whole modular thing will mean that certain ones are better tasked for ASW, Land Attack, MCM, etc . . .
The merits of this approach are hotly debated of course . . .
