FDR had Hitler.
JFK had his Khurshev.
Reagan had Qaddafi.
Clinton had Slobodan Milosevic.
Bush (Senior and Junior) had Saddam.
Obama's arch-nemesis = Vladimir Putin?

Do you think it likely that Russia is planning a major powerplay to test America's new president?

Nah...
Nothing to worry a bout.
The US would never enter into an armed conflict with a major superpower.
Only small deadbeat countries with no significant military power. "Iraq, Panama, Afghanistan just to name a few"

Not armed conflict, per se...
So you're saying President Obama will not face a Cuban Missile Crisis-like scenario during his presidency?

Mexico, dont forget them. Did we ever invade San Marino or Monaco?
Many more to come, Mr. Putin is no school boy, not naive and he is a warrior who is ruthless. I think Hussein has many more challenges of this type coming his way very soon. The rest of the world isn't as naive as the voting American public.
Umm maybe he can meet for lunch. Put him on the roster with North Korea, Iran and so many others.

Nah, dont have to. those Non-Nuclear Missiles in Poland will never be installed now. and our New Civilian Security force will be too busy with our own country to worry about foreign Intanglements.

And what if President Obama meets the challenges head-on with resolve and overall success, proving he is as tough as FDR, Truman, and JFK? I bet a million wingnut heads nationwide will explode simultaneously. LOL

Well said; You're absolutely correct. Obviously you as a supporter would be very surprised as well. Yes, even the Patriot Americans who still believe in our national security would be stunned. You're not even in the states so what do you care...DC!?

Obama this,Obama that,Obama hit me with a baseball bat.
I find it amusing that here traditionally hostile forces that fought a proxy war with Russia this summer encircle Russia and yet Russia is viewed as the aggressive party here.

I would say given the results of the past election that the older, narrower, GOP definition of patriot will have to be revised. Perhaps it means more to more Americans this time around than simply toeing the party line.

Putin is not a 'warrior'
He flew a desk during the Cold War. East Germany was not exactly a 'hardship' posting in fact it was probably just about the cushiest posting going.
Ivanov is the real power behind the throne in Russia.

Even without nuclear weapons there will never be a major confrontation between major powers again on a scale that we have witnessed these past few centuries.
There will be instances were planes are shot down, the odd naval encounter that results in warning shots and maybe the odd border skirmish.
But mass industrialized warfare on a global scale. Nope not going to happen. For 3 reasons.
1. No bastard can afford it. We are at a point where a single fighter plane costs more money then current generation frigates and destroyers
2. The West no longer has the industrial capacity to manufacturer the equipment needed for a sustained confrontation with another industrialized power.
3. With the rise of democracy, liberty and living standards it's highly unlikely that a population would accept war with another major power

The US and SU (now Russia) have for the last 65 avoided a direct military confrontation and i don't see that changing.Even at the height of the cold war both sides remained cool headed.
Plus what is Russia planning to "test" Obama?

Really. From what I have seen of him he would appear to be a formidable operator. His background is very interesting and his grasp of English is very impressive.

To be honest, I personelly tired from all BS on Rusian TV saying that US is a key for all problems. This is just not true, hope more and more people starting to understand this. I also beleive, that good dialog between Obama and Medvedev will be established. This is really good chance now!

Sorry, but I disagree with this. He is a good member of the team, but not a keyplayer.

There is no "test" planning, I guess, just to point his attention to unresolved problems which concerned Russia. And give clear sign that Russians are ready for dialog.

Igor Ivanov is a head of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Ivanov is Vice-Prime Minister. My comments regarding their roles as part of the team are good for both of them.

What about all the articles with the single thought, like "oh, dont mind us European states defaulting, but Russia's economy is crumbling every day, and THATS something you just HAVE to know about today" ? Didnt you get tired of that ?

If Russia went for the Georgian oil pipeline the U.S. would send troops in.

It's an oversimplification.

nope. too simple-minded for a "power behind the throne". really. S.Ivanov - just an ugly child of a Putin team. still, good for certain tasks.
oh, and man is extremely unpopular here.
If Russia went for the Georgian oil pipeline the U.S. would send troops in.
haha, ok, if US went for, let's say, Belorussian pipeline, us Russkies would sent troops in too, so, your reason for such funky message?

The only problem is that Russia doesn't care about Georgian pipelines....
Well, I don 't know why would Russia need to test Obama... plus if for some reason a conflict stars beween the two nations, minor or major, we would either see thousands of caskets with flags flying towards our countries, or we would see white stripes on our skies...strippes that will end up with a big boom.
And if there's someone that will test Obama, that will be Iran, I believe.
I'm sure that a Merkel, Putin and Obama threesome will take place in the spring of 2009...

And if there's someone that will test Obama, that will be Iran, I believe. There is speculation that the Russian MoD and Siloviki want to provoke Obama into an arms race that will help them secure funding for their pet projects. Beyond that, I am certain they want to size him up.

My fingers slipped on the keyboard because I was laughing so hard at the hilarity of the notion that being popular is a prerequisite for being in charge in Russia ;-)

yawn again.
why do you even bother yourself to write in a threads about Russia your usual chauvinistic rubbish? it seems like you can't see my reasons even if somebody smash them into your head with a sledgehammer.

nowadays popularity seems to be a necessity in Russia - otherwise Putin wouldn't have had to shoot tigers, fish with bare chest etc.

Well that trained him to deal with Finns in early to mid 90's when he entered local politics in St.Petersburg. There is clear progression in management skills in his career. Germany=beer... Finland=vodka+sauna, vodka>beer. Russians naturally can deal with vodka but Finns are in same level when it comes to drinking vodka. Next level in Putins way to godhood is? Crack, speed, heroin, weed... p-)
